Trailer For The Elijah Wood Starring ‘Maniac’ Actually Pretty Hardcore

P2 helmer Franck Khalfoun’s Maniac, a remake of William Lustig’s cult horror film about a serial killer, has a partially complete trailer our of Cannes that’s actually pretty intense. The picture was written by Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes, Piranha 3D, Mirrors, High Tension) and his producing/writing partner Grégory Levasseur. It stars Elijah Wood (The Lord Of The Rings and Nora Arnezeder (Safe House).

In the film, “Wood plays the role of a serial killer who works at a shop that sells antique mannequins. He finds victims on the Internet and stalks them like prey, all the while suffering from hallucinations that throw him back into the past, when he was abused by his own mother. In his twisted mind, he gains a measure of revenge against his mother with each kill.

Head inside to check out the trailer, courtesy of First Showing. It’s only partially complete but we’ll update when we have the whole thing. Oh, and it’s definitely NSFW what with all the nudity and killing etc…

This actually looks good. I’m not a huge fan of remakes, but this looks well done. The original Maniac is my favorite slasher film. Actually looking forward to this. Rita knowsss!

  • I’m sold. Though we’ve seen Elijah be pretty evil already, remember Sin City?

WOW! this looks GOOD! is it weird that i think it looks artsy at the same time it looks like a full on good slasher? lol. i’m impressed with what i see here! i think Franck did a pretty good job with P2 and i look forward to see this movie!

the original was kinda artsy at points, good to see tradition maintained. Hopefully after this the Frodo jokes will disappear and he’ll be recognized for his better roles.

  • turtlenipple

YES!!!!!!!!! Huge fan of the original.. can’t wait for this.

  • turtlenipple

And I loved P2.. I think this has all the right stuff.

  • VampiresDontSparkle

Holy fuck, this looks wonderful!!! I thought P2 was brilliantly disturbing and pretty well acted, so I cannot wait to see how Maniac plays out.

  • crow454

I don’t know how this will work out in modern day NYC, 80’s NYC was really dirty and played a big part with the atmosphere of the original.

    • PatrickxJonathan

So what’s changed? NYC is still disgusting.

      • bambi_lives8980

PatrickxJonathan, agreed. But some of the more popular areas have improved quite a bit from the filth infested burroughs of NYC in the 70s and 80s, where it was filled with gangs junkies hookers etc. other great movies with similarly garbage and filth smitten urban cities (that really played a character in the movie) would be Combat Shock, Taxi Driver, Street Trash, The Warriors, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Basketball Diaries etc. By the way I love all of these movies. Another thing I really am concerned about was the fact that Joe Spinell was a completely unattractive overweight dude which really makes the role that much more diverse, and Frankly (pun intended) scary. But I don’t know Wood might be able to pull off the other aspects of the role, seems they’ve got the signature Maniac Mustache down!

Look at the shots of the subway from the trailer and then look at the shots of the subway from the original “Maniac” and try and tell me there’s no difference. I was going to say the same thing Wood not looking scummy enough, but look at someone like Bundy, he didn’t look like a serial killer either.

You know, it looks ok, but not really different enough to make be bother to watch this. If you do a remake it still needs to be something new and original(and I don’t mean a modern rewrite of the script). If you can’t bother with that (like Aja doesn’t seem to bother with) you’re just lazy and trying to cash in on the original. Yes this one looks artsy, but so did the original, so that is not adding anything new. a good remake is something you could watch back to back with the original while they complement eachother. I can’t make a fill judgement on just this trailer, but thus far I’ll stick with only the original. Kinda weird Aja is trying to make us forget he actually make a very cool original movie once (with a shit ending though).

  • I’d watch it. I like Elijah Woods.
