[San Diego Comic-Con '12] Guillermo Del Toro Has Yet To See ‘Prometheus Because It’s So Similar To ‘At the Mountains of Madness’

In an interview with Empire, Pacific Rim director Guillermo del Toro proclaims his string intentions to get the H.P. Lovecraft adaptation of At the Mountains of Madness made, while also dropping a shocking little bit of news.

I think we may still make it. When I’m brave enough to go and see Prometheus, I’ll know,” Del Toro revealed to the mag. “But for now, I don’t know. We are all nothing but human beings. I go to the theatre, I buy my ticket for Prometheus and I go and see something else, because I’m afraid. I’m not a mental entity, I am also emotional, because the ideas are similar, from what I’ve heard and I’ll see it next week, I promise!

It’s kind of shocking to hear del Toro explain that he’s yet to see Prometheus, but for good reason. He should relish in the fact that many think Ridley Scott dropped the ball with his interpretation. Maybe del Toro can deliver something a bit more coherent?

Universal Pictures’ would-be H.P. Lovecraft adaptation “tells the story of geologist William Dyer, a professor from Miskatonic University. He writes to disclose hitherto unknown and closely kept secrets in the hope that he can deter a planned and much publicized scientific expedition to Antarctica. On a previous expedition there, a party of scholars from Miskatonic University, led by Dyer, discovered fantastic and horrific ruins (including strange fossils of unheard-of creatures and carved stones tens of millions of years old) and a dangerous secret of the City of the Old Ones that lay beyond a range of mountains taller than the Himalayas.

He’d have to figure out a way to lower the budget regardless of Prometheus. Maybe he should call up Robert Rodriguez and ask him how he makes films for so cheap. It probably will depend on how Pacific Rim does too, I don’t think any of Del Toro’s films have made a giant profit.

i really hope he still makes ATMOM. while i mostly enjoyed PROMETHEUS many many people didn’t and would love for Del Toro to make his movie. just make the movie Del Toro!

So if he hasn’t seen it…why is he claiming they’re so similar and even share set pieces???

  • Trioxin83

Exactly, how can he claim that? Del Toro’s statement comes off as a bit dickish sounding to me

  • djblack1313

i agree. he’s coming off as a cry baby douche bag.

???? still how is ATMOM anything to do with prometheus LMFAO. Dude just see the movie. Well anyways I will love toro no matter what he is amazing. :) he’ll prob make it sooner or later he’s prob fucking with us and already has it made and will be putting it out in summer 2013. HAHA that would own. I would do that if I was a director if I wanted to make insane movies I would just tell the public horse shit storys and make it release no trailers for it until like 10 days before the movie just release a teaser with an opening saying HAHAHAH I was fuckin with you all. Show the teaser, release the film. And call it a day. But thats just me :)

I get that they’re kinda similar, but I know that (even though I like Prometheus) DelToro’s Mountains of Madness will be way more memorable.
