What Comics Do You Want Adapted For The Big Screen?
Given the recent success of comic book summer blockbusters, and the current trend in Hollywood to reboot, remake, or adapt old material, it’s inevitable that we’ll be seeing more of our beloved comic books on the big screen. Neil Gaiman’s “Sandman” series has been in development several times over the years, a “Crawl to Me” film will be upon us soon, and, as per usual, FOX blew it by passing on the “Locke & Key” series. It’s clear that horror comics lend themselves to on-screen adaptations. The question is, which books do you actually want to see on the big screen?
A few months back I ran an article about the comics I would love to see as a film or TV series. There are so many books out there, so many long-running series, so much good horror, but it’s hard to imagine which books could actually work. The biggest issue in bringing comics to life is that comics have no budget, no actors, and no FX department. There are few limitations when it comes to creating comics. Films, on the other hand, are extremely limited by these factors. It takes more than just a good comic and a good director to make a proper adaptation.
As we’ve seen time and time again comic book movies fall short more often than not. Spawn, Swamp Thing, and Ghost Rider, are prime examples of books with great potential that crashed and burned into stinky piles of garbage. But, we’ve also seen how great these can be with 30 Days of Night, The Crow, and Hellboy.
As it stand right now, my number one choice for an adaptation is Scott Snyder and Scott Tuft’s “Severed” series from last year. In my mind, it is a perfect horror comic. It’s creepy as hell, bone chillingly tense, packed with scares, and it’s short enough to be adapted to a feature film without demanding an insane budget. Furthermore, it’s rare to see a horror movie these days with a kid in the lead role. I think there’s potential with “Severed” for a Joe Dante style throwback, which is currently going untapped in the film industry. Plus, I would much rather see a comic book move to the big screen, than another goddam horror franchise reboot.
So, how about you guys? What horror comic are you dying to see on the big screen?

I’ve just read Frank Miller’s Ronin and i think that could be a pretty bad ass flick or take Dark Tower to the big screen.
What a wonderful day! My best friend , she just has announced her wedding with a biker old man! They met via motodating.çòm -it is the largest and best club for bikers and friends to get to know each other, establish relationship and talk about their interests, or to help each other. if you are interested in it, just check it out.
johnny the homicidal maniac. that could be very fun if jhonen vasquez directed or wrote/produced.
Ya beat me to it! But… 100% with you here. JtHM is begging to be on the big screen…
yes!!! looks like i’m not the only one with that idea.
Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden’s “Baltimore”
Mike Mignola’s “Sir Edward Grey: Witchfinder”
Mike Mignola’s “B.P.R.D. 1946″
Marvel’s “Tomb of Dracula”
DC’s “Swamp Thing”
DC’s “I, Vampire”
I’d love to see a new Swamp Thing. So much potential!
I also agree with a decent Swamp Thing movie.
I’ve only found two issues of the newer Tomb of Dracula, but they were both incredible writing. I would love to see that made.
Preacher! And Hellblazer minus keanu reeves.
I’ve been waiting on preacher for a while, it would be amazing. It reads so well, hopefully they wouldn’t change it haha.
I would love to see an R rated Spawn Reboot. I remember reading somewhere a whle back that it was gonna happen, but i haven’t heard anthing since.
I imagine this will happen sooner or later. I loved the Spawn movie growing up but it’s a huge piece of junk.
Evil Ernie!!!
Criminal Macabre,
Hellblazer minus keanu reeves again,
Mike Mignola’s B.P.R.D, and those graphic novel with Christopher Golden’s.
DeadPool! If they would make it a vulgar, gore fest. The only way it should be done. I also wouldn’t mind a EC comics or Creepy type anthology series.
I suspect that if the video game does well, the Deadpool film will finally get the okay.
I thought the video game looked pretty rad from the trailer.
I was so upset by the trailer. It looks like they’re going to make him out to be all cartoon-ish and goofy like spiderman instead of a psychotic badass with hilarious one-liners.
-The Mask. I got into contact with the comic through the movie, but the movie really mist the gory awesomeness of the comic. I hate remakes, but this is one I root for. But this time it should stick to the source material.
-Agent Fear. Bruce Campbell as the lead or whattabout Thomas Jane
-Lobster Johnson, another role made for Bruce.
-Black Summer and
-No Hero: two great Warren Ellis stories.
-Batman: But this time the version David Cronenberg wanted to make.
- Planetarium: another one by Ellis that could be interresting.
- Great Lake Avengers: that would be freaking hilarious.
Bruce Campbell should play every role!
There’s some great picks in there man. I don’t know what they were thinking when they did the mask. It was insanely bad. If they’d actually read the comic(in all its violent glory) I think it would’ve been turned down haha. I like your idea for Thomas Jane to play “Heath” in Fear Agent. That would be awesome as a TV series, hopefully mature.
I’d love to see Lobster Johnson!
i know it would never happen but CROSSED would be my choice! it’s so fucked up and over the top that it’s impossible not to love it! LOL.
I’d like to see it as a mini web series. It’s really messed up.
It would be pretty cool to see. Last I’d heard Ennis had written a screenplay but who knows what’s happening. It would be a pretty dark film. Hopefully not to toned down either, that was part of its charm haha.
Would you rather see a adaption of one of the comics or just a new story??? I think the First or Psychopath story lines would be great.
Criminal Macarbe with Don Cascarelli Directing and Steve Niles with Joe R. Lansdale doing the screenplay. Thomas Jane as Cal McDonald and Ron Perlman as his ghoul partner Mo’lok.
Also how about a John Constantine – Hellblazer tv series, make it british again, using the comics as source material.
Witchdoctor would make a good movie as well possibly as a horror anthology as well with Vincent Morrow as the link/wrap around guy.
Criminal Macabre would be awesome. I’d like to see Chris Cunningham on effects too haha.
hack/slash, maybe more of a series on showtime…would be sick.
The movie is already in production! I think it would be a better TV series as well.
wow, very stoked about that. how whoever is doing it, does it justice.
Preacher
The Nocturnals
Superman vs Doomsday
Alan Moore’s “The Courtyard”
Elf Quest (I know I’m a dork)
Marvel vs. Zombies, done differently, where they all fall one by one to the zombie apocalypse
The Secret Wars – everyone vs someone
or anything with Galactus
It would be rad if Marvel did those as a web series for October. Just to get the “hero” fans into the spirit.
darkness!
I’d love to see The Coffin, another tales from the crypt series (especially with all the new horror talent), Richard Corben’s stories, Hellblazer, The Goon, Junji Ito’s comics. I’d also love to see a continuation of Hellraiser done right(people have been making some campy crap lately). I think I’ve given up hope on ghost rider, I feel they failed twice and will probably let it die for 10 years until fans forget haha. Constantine was a joke, they put so much effort in too, just the wrong areas. I loved the tongue in cheek jokes of Hellboy, but the flavor was way off. Making kid friendly horror flicks just doesn’t work for some ideas. People should stick to the source material for most comic adaptations, as opposed to using it as a launch pad for s#it.
Doctor Strange get Timur Bekmatoev ( wanted, Night/
Day Shift and ALVH) to Direct. He’s got a destinctive style, does the weird and wonderful justice.
Have Strange already established as earths protector and have his orgin story in flash backs.
Needs to be an apocalptic storyline, something almost Lovecraftian.
I’ve been waiting for years for a Witchblade and/or Darkness movie.
I almost did a back flip when I heard about a Witchblade TV show, but that turned out to be absolute garbage.
The Killer
The Authority
Planetary
Runaways
Young Avengers
I’d love to see Runaways
I love to see a Hellsing or even a Vampire Hunter D. I could see some animated movies of Freddy vs Jason vs Ash and Marvel Zombies. Maybe even Punisher Vs the Marvel Universe where the heroes turned into cannibals. Anyone read Pixu the Mark of Evil? It could make a good movie.
Not so much movies, but definitely HBO/SHOWTIME style series, I would love to see Y: the last man and Preacher come to life. Especially Preacher.
The Flamming Carrot
Sam and Max
The Tick (the tv show was lame)
Madman
Milk and Cheese
Scud TDA
Evil Erine
Mr. Nightmare, (great indie book)
Cerebus
Bone
The Savage Dragon
Spawn
Wild CATS
Silverhawks
Thundercats
Archie
Holy shit I would love to see animated Bone.
Dylan Dog – but finally done right! With London and its bleak atmosphere, Bloch, Madame Trelkovski, Craven Road 7 and, of course, his sidekick Groucho!
Johnny the Homicidal Maniac and Gerard Way’s The Umbrella Academy would be great, though I’ve heard rumours that they’re already planning something for that! xx
Misery City with either Lance Henriksen or Harvey Kietel in the lead role, have it purely independent.
How about Misery City? Have Stuart Gordon directing. Lance Henriken in the lead role of Max, or someone weather beaten like him.
I’d love to see Misery City. It’s only a matter of time before someone seriously makes a noir/horror mashup.
The Invisibles
No Hero (send it to Pixar, a full on digital version NC-17)
Crossed, but as a series of films, each story line being part … whatever.
The Boys (which someone was trying to do, and imagine! Simon Pegg was being tapped to play the part that was obvious… I’d love to see him and Patrick Warburton together)
There was a short-lived comic called Crimson that had to do with vampires, demons, saints, Lucifer, etc… that could be one sweet ride over 3 films
The Strange Adventures of H.P. Lovecraft would be great.
I’m not a D.C. fan but I think the mini series “Dead Romeo” was very compelling and I would definitely go see it.
The Maxx — Though, I’m sure it’d be ruined.
The Crow (Not a remake of the film — A film that remains true to the source material. The original film was terrible.)
Batman reboot — Directed by somebody awesome.
A Morbius The Living Vampire movie is long overdue.
