Horror comics are becoming more and more frequent in our reading culture, and the Ghastly Awards recognize, through peer nominations, those books that shine the brightest. The Ghastly Awards judges are back with another monthly update to remind all those people in the industry, and readers alike, of the great books that have been released thus far in 2012. The judges encourage all creators to take the time to head over to www.ghastlyawards.com and nominate those who you think are the best so far.

Creators please remember that you can nominate up to 5 times throughout the year, so make your voice heard! For the month of June 2012 the judges are recommending you take a look at:

Eerie #1 (Dark Horse):

Though Dark Horse’s CREEPY has been slightly slipping since winning last year’s Ghastly Award for best anthology, it’s still pretty much the cream of the multi-story-horror-comic crop. So, it’s been with equal measures of anticipation and trepidation that I’ve been waiting for the recently released sister title EERIE. What Dark Horse has delivered for the inaugural issue is a mixed bag. First off, it’s leaning towards the sci-fi, rather than pure horror. That’s OK- I’m open minded, and David Lapham’s “A Robot for Your Thoughts” is surely more horrific than not! The other new story is also fine. The problem for me is… two reprints pad out the contents! Sure there’s a Jones/ Corben classic and a Bill Dubay chestnut, but in my opinion, if half of the content of the debut issue is reprints, perhaps Dark Horse just wasn’t yet ready to launch the new EERIE. Go for CREEPY #9 instead… Peter Bagge has joined the crew and his humorous one-pagers are worth the cover price! – Mike Howlett

Creepy #9 (Dark Horse):

Dark Horses’ revamped CREEPY series continues creepying along with it’s 9th issue, featuring new stories, plus one classic Warren reprint courtesy of Corban and Jones. If you have a taste for thingies universally parallel and Lovecraftian, or a terror for kitchen utensils, then this is the comic for you. Indie HATE fave, Peter Bagge, makes his CREEPY debut here as well! – Steve Banes (http://thehorrorsofitall.blogspot.com/)

Alabaster: Wolves #4 (Dark Horse):

I love absolutely everything about this series from the adolescent albino teenage lead to the song suggestions at the end of every issue. It’s always tough to adapt a short story into comic book form but Caitlìn R. Kiernan has had no problem bringing her female huntress, Dancy Flammarion, to life in paneled pages. Steve Lieber’s artwork stands out as some of the best out there right now, in particular the way he draws Dancy’s guardian angel is simply bone chilling. Alabaster: Wolves is a very strange tale that explores with issues of difference, religion, folklore, American life, and as a huge bonus, it makes werewolves cool again. Things are heating up before the final issue of the miniseries, and I can’t wait to see how Kiernan closes out this chapter in Dancy’s life. I can only hope she’ll be coming back for more. – Lonnie Nadler (www.Bloody-Disgusting.com)

Revival #1 (Image):

When I picked up this issue I thought I might have a good idea of what was going to take place inside these pages, I was so wrong. This story dives right into the madness, which seems to include the living dead, aliens and a zorse. I will not tell you what a zorse is, you have to read it to find out. The suspense was always present and when you reach the end, you are creeped out and left wanting more and more. – Decapitated Dan (www.decapitateddan.com)
