TV: Will AMC Attempt A “The Walking Dead” Feature Film?!
While “Sex and the City” and “X-Files” found a way to make the leap from the small to big screen, “24,” “Lost” and “The Sopranos” failed to make the transition. The odds are always against a feature version of a television series, although many older programs have found a way (Yogi Bear, Smurfs, The Jetsons and most recently ALF).
The problem is that big network transitions are much more difficult because the series’ story arc needs to be addressed, not to mention casting the leads is exponentially more expensive than creating CGI bears that steal picnic baskets. It’s also insanely difficult to take the stretched out pacing of a 13 to 22-episode series and compact it into an interesting hour and half singular story. That’s why I beg FX to push for an “American Horror Story” feature, it’s primed for greatness.
With that said, I have some friends working closely with “The Walking Dead” crew and AMC who confirm with me rumblings of a feature film. But before you get your panties in a bunch, we’re only in the third season of the popular zombie show – adapted from Robert Kirkman’s astounding comic book – and when I say rumblings, I strongly suggest the idea has been passed off in non-business conversations. The show was originally shopped as a feature film before it went network, so the idea of ending the series with an hour and a half feature would be exciting. But as I stated before, “24,” “Lost” and “The Sopranos” had been rumored for years, and they all failed to make the jump.
It’s clear that I’ve let my excitement get the best of me by sharing this news – and when I say nothing is official, I obviously mean, nothing is even close to official and don’t expect there to be any real talks for another few years. This is purely for speculation and for you guys to tell us what you think. If AMC revisits this notion a few years from now, would you want to see a “Walking Dead” feature? And more importantly, what do you think they should do?

A film could work. The walking dead is a tri-fecta (great comic, great tv and so far great video game), so why not see if it can be great at 4 things. They can make a film to explain the events before the show or have it based on the book “Rise of the Governor” since the third season will feature him, or use a major storyline like depending on how long they do the prison storyline, the movie can be based on the end of it
I don’t really see the point. I think the greatness of TWD is that it’s a series (the comic or the tvseries) which means that it can take it’s time do develop the characters/human side of things. A movie will probably just be another zombi movie. Sure it worked for X-files, but that was more a monster of the week show and Sex in the city came after the series.

I agree with both of the above posters. The only way this could work is if its done after the series is completed so that it can either ultimately finalize the story and still work as a feature film. Otherwise it will feel like a side story that may or may not be good and fit into the series as a whole.
A movie about Daryl and Merle beginning at the start of the Apocalypse and how they survived Atlanta and met up with the group would work. Their history is kinda fuzzy still and there was no mention of how they ended up joining Shane’s camp.
Or maybe base it on “The Rise of the Governor” book covering his background.
Would probably best be done as a prequel before Rick woke from the coma rather than set where they currently are.
Isn’t the whole Daryl and Merle story part of the FPS that’s being made now?
I abosolutly love AMC’s The Walking Dead! What has to be done for this series to be on air forever?
@Gonzolegend, that would be a great! Although it’s been done, the spreading of the infection would be a gruesome film. Making a storyline about this will work even if the show is still airing, giving it more and more hype to the series & the comics.
I actually would prefer the movie to follow a separate group of survivors (perhaps even reveal what happened to that father and son who staid behind in Rick’s town). That way, you aren’t overly bound to the TV series, and leaves plenty of room for subsequent crossovers.

I think a movie could work for the end of the series, but as was already mentioned in the article there are several successful series that are still waiting their movie conclusions.
I don’t think something in between season would work; just doesn’t seem right.
