The tyro helming duo behind last year’s record-breaking Thai chiller “The Shutter” will team on another horror thriller. Announcement was made at the Pusan Film Festival, which is becoming an increasingly popular platform for new product launches.
The sophomore effort of Parkpoom Wongpoom and Banjong Pisanthanakun, “Alone” is a $2.5 million suspenser set up at GMM Tai Hub, Thailand’s largest media group, with production through local indies Dedicate and Phenomena Motion Pictures.
The no-budget “Shutter” notched $2.7 million at the Thai box office in 2004 and sold to New Regency for English-language remake in a high-six-figure deal in May. Success of the pic was in part responsible for a revival of horror productions in Asia outside established genre factories in Japan and Korea.
Helmers Wongpoom and Pisanthanakun, who were students struggling to break into the film industry when they made “Shutter,” had previously announced they would split up and concentrate on their own dramatic pics. Wongpoom was working on “Life With a Mission,” about Thailand’s political kidnappings, while Pisanthanakun was readying “AIDS Diary.”
Dedicate executive Mingmongkol Sonakul said the pair aim to shoot “Alone” in March and then will return to their individual efforts. Both dramas are to be produced by Phenomena Motion Pictures, a joint venture between GTH and Dedicate, a leading Thai ad agency.
“Alone” concerns a couple who travel from Korea to set up home in Thailand. It could be set up as a Korean-Thai joint production or be fully financed by GMM.
International sales arrangements are similarly not set, although GMM has distributed several of its titles through Australia’s Arclight.
