This weekend’s new offerings in the wide-release arena are slim in quantity but thick with boxoffice expectations, at least in respect to Warner Bros. Pictures’ V for Vendetta (review #1, #2), according to the Hollywood Reporter. Just two new titles — the fewest in the past six weeks — are entering the marketplace in wide release this time: “Vendetta” and Paramount Pictures’ She’s the Man. Based on a comic book by Alan Moore, the sci-fi action-thriller “Vendetta” has been garnering more positive than negative reviews and has met with some controversy regarding the plot line of a futuristic terrorist freedom fighter. Produced by Joel Silver’s Silver Pictures, “Vendetta” is getting an ultrawide release in 3,365 theaters in North America. Of those, 56 are Imax large-format venues, where the film will be released day-and-date in DMR format. There is little doubt among industry observers that “Vendetta” will be the No. 1 film this weekend.
