According to Variety, Len Wiseman, director of both Underworld films and this summer’s smash Live Free Or Die Hard, is in final negotiations to take over the reins of the Gerard Butler-starring remake of John Carpenter’s classic Escape From New York. In addition, Carpenter himself will executive produce, much like he did for The Fog remake from 2005. At this rate, with his entire filmography seemingly getting remade almost in sequence (there’s a Thing redux in the works as well), someone better whip up a Christine script pronto. Wiseman’s in final negotiations with the mini-major, which won bidding in March for a package that included Butler following the boffo launch of “300.”
“Black Hawk Down” scribe Ken Nolan is penning the script. Exec producers include Original’s Ori Marmur; Ron Halpern and Frederic Sichler of Canal Plus, which held the remake rights; and John Carpenter, who directed the original 1981 pic.
