[TIFF ’12 Review] Brad Is Blown Away By Most Of ‘Dredd 3D’

Writer Alex Garland (28 Days Later, Sunshine) and director Pete Travis (Vantage Point) bring Dredd back to life as a futuristic neo-noir action film that is pretty d*mn hardcore. The film screened last night at TIFF so we figure it’s time to feature our review.

The reviews have been mostly gushing, and Brad pretty much feels the same way (with some reservations about the film’s ending).

Dredd is a supercharged comic adaptation that’s faithful to the source material and made specifically for the fans. There’s nothing to indicate an attempt to appeal to mass audiences, which means Dredd was made for YOU, which is a rare treat in the cinematic haze of remakes, franchise films and generic thrillers. Even with a lackluster finale, soak this magnificent work of art in and enjoy the hour and a half gift from the movie gods.

I loved the film too, for what it’s worth. Click here to read the review in its entirety, then check back after the film comes out to write your own.

The film has’nt been released yet, how did you two manage to see it?

  • djblack1313

Joe, the movie opens (in the UK) next week(?). critic screenings are most likely happening (either that or the BD crew stole a copy of the movie! LOL. joking guys!).

Evan, i was already pretty excited for DREDD but now knowing you guys are liking/loving the movie too, i REALLY can’t wait to see this! and (no need to answer this either way) it REALLY looks like they gave away how Ma Ma dies in the trailer and even one of the featurette things (which, if true, makes me really angry). Ma Ma, wears a sleeveless black shirt i believe and it looks like Dredd throws/smashes a woman wearing a black sleeveless shirt through the window (i believe Dredd makes some dramatic line to her first).

anywho….i LOVE Lena Headey and she’s the big draw for me (but i like Olivia and Ken too, of course!).

and off topic, Evan (or any BD crew) remember that After Dark movie that has never been released called RE-KILL? since you guys have contacts/access to those in the biz, can you guys put in a word to ANYONE on where this movie is? it’s been done for over a year and has now gone missing apparently. thanx!

    • EvanDickson

@djblack1313 I never saw re-kill, but I can email After Dark about it!

  • Joe-Banger

Thanx djblack, obviously you got my message on another page. I’d really like to Evan how you and “Brad” managed to see an early screening unless you made that all up.

    • EvanDickson

@Joe-Banger A. it showed at TIFF las night. B. Lionsgate showed it to me at a screening in their building several weeks back.

  • EvanDickson

@joe-banger they also showed it to a bunch or press (and random public) at comic-con.

Jealsous. I should become a critic so I can see stuff early.

Also, if you’re a Halloween fan – check out a petition I started to help bring Michael Myers back properly:

Thanks to those who have already shown their support. The fans shall not be ignored!

    Ugh, just two more weeks!

The first trailer blew me away, and I can’t wait to see this. I actually enjoyed Stallone’s Judge Dredd, but this film will obliviously be 100% different. I remember Lena Headey from Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and I have big expectations for the Mama character.

  • djblack1313

i really liked this movie! Lena Headey is fucking awesome and so vile and evil as Ma Ma!! Olivia Thirlby was very good as Anderson (i loved the surprise change/twist they give her) and i love Karl Urban but honestly, anyone could have played his role. he never takes his helmet off so it’s not like his face is a selling point in this. he just grimaces the whole time.

AND FOR THE RECORD THE TRAILERS/TV SPOTS TOTALLY RUIN THE ENDING REGARDING “MA MA”. they show her fate!! why do people who makes trailers insist on putting in such big spoilers?!! in PIRANHA 3D’s tv spots it showed the final “GOTCHA!!” moment regarding Adam Scott’s Novak & the adult piranha. etc, etc. it’s annoying.

    but DREDD was great!
