Guillermo Del Toro Post-Converting ‘Pacific Rim’ To 3D, What Do You Think?

Guillermo del Toro’s epic sci-fi adventure Pacific Rim will be converted into 3D, per Variety. The film is “Set in a future in which malevolent creatures threaten the earth, the planet must band together and use highly advanced technology to eradicate the growing menace.” Charlie Hunnam, Charlie Day, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Robert Kazinsky, Ron Perlman, Max Martini, Clifton Collins, Jr., Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, Diego Klattenhoff and Brad William Henke all star.

What’s interesting about this article is that even GDT doesn’t seem to think this is a good idea. It’s an unusually strongly worded piece from a trade publication, they don’t normally throw around words like “strong-armed”. But here they do! “Warner Bros. has strong-armed Guillermo del Toro to convert ‘Pacific Rim’ to 3D. The alien invasion pic has all the ingredients for a 3D tentpole — giant robots vs. aliens in a planet-wide battle to save humanity. But at Comic-Con in July, del Toro said he was resistant to converting the film to 3D because of the scale and size of the pic’s creatures. The director has never released a 3D pic. In the end, the prospect of the 3D upcharge — especially overseas — was likely too much for Warners to resist.

Pacific Rim opens on July 12, 2013. Which version will you be seeing? I’m kind of bummed. 2D screens – the director’s choice – will probably be a limited option.

I wouldn’t have minded 3D if he shot it that way, but since it’s post- conversion I say no thanks.

Just studio greed. I don’t mind a good 3D flick and there have been some but post conversions don’t usually work. And if the director doesn’t want it in 3D that also says something.

I will not see it in 3d. 3d conversion only increases profits for the studio, it does not increase the audiences appreciation for the film. It’s just a gimmick suitable only for children.

Never seeing another 3D movie as long as I live. Last two movies I saw in 3D were “Phantom Menace” and “Prometheus”. I already knew that “Phantom Menace” was a horrible movie to begin with but wanted to see what throwing mega amounts of dollars at it would do for the 3D aspect of it and was completely underwhelmed. I saw “Prometheus” first in 2D and then in 3D and felt the 3D did absolutely nothing for the film. I’ll be watching “Pacific Rim” in regular 2D thank you.

Damn. I was really looking forward to this, but post 3D is just horrible. I tied to see Avengers in 2D but in my country there was no cinema that had it. I’m really getting tired of this bullshit. I’m not going to pay more for less.
