‘The Lords of Salem’ Trailer Is Finally Here!!!

After premiering at the Midnight Madness portion of TIFF, Anchor Bay Films emerged as the new home for Rob Zombie’s The Lords Of Salem. Under the agreement, Anchor Bay will handle all U.S. distribution rights on the film. The first trailer premiered this afternoon. Check it out below and tell us what you think!

Written and directed by Rob Zombie, The Lords of Salem stars Sheri Moon Zombie (House of 1,000 Corpses, Halloween) as well as Bruce Davison (X-Men), Jeff Daniel Phillips (Halloween 2), Ken Foree (Dawn of the Dead), Patricia Quinn (The Rocky Horror Picture Show), Dee Wallace (E.T.) and Judy Geeson (To Sir, With Love).

Rock star-turned-horror maven Rob Zombie conjures up a nerve-wracking chiller involving Heidi (Sheri Moon Zombie), a radio station DJ, who receives a wooden box containing a vinyl record, “a gift from the Lords.” She assumes it’s from a band trying to promote themselves. Heidi and others listen but unbeknownst to them, the bizarre sounds within the grooves immediately trigger flashbacks of Salem’s violent past. Is Heidi going mad or are the Lords of Salem returning for revenge on modern day Salem?

Check out my review with Mike’s alternate opinion here.

i’m not loving the trailer but it looks beautifully shot (the lighting/cinematography). some parts of this come off kinda goofy/cheesy (when the three witches are chanting “we are ready”) and i’m apparently one of the few who doesn’t dislike Sheri and i thought she was pretty good in HALLOWEEN but i don’t know if she is good enough to be the main character and actually carry a film.

  • Joe-Banger

Holy fuck! That looked amazing! Its about damn time that we finally have a trailer! I agree djblack but there is always a first time for everything. The longer the wait the better the film I hope.

  • theodds22

I don’t really know what to say.

  • wehoaks

The only word I can think of to describe this is pretentious. Pretentious in the sense that Rob Zombie’s biggest fan is Rob Zombie. This looks like pure self-fellating shit.

  • ttop33

All style and no content makes Jack a dull boy.

    • Long Pig

I agree. This looks like yet another student film project.
I would rather see Werewolf Nazis.

      • grayghost

Rob Zombie is is the Spike lee of horror. He needs stick to music and music videos.

  • Cooper

That’s visually stunning. Its got a bit of an Argento feel to it.

    • djblack1313

Cooper, i definitely got an Argento vibe from it too! most definitely.

      • VampireJack

Count me in as another who had a “sure this isn’t a film by Argento” moment for a second; kinda gave me an attempted “3 mothers” vibe to it, with a little bit of The Church thrown in for good measure.
        Definitely an Italian influence……….

  • K-Dogg

So will Rob Zombie go down as having directed one badass flick in The Devil’s Rejects, with a bunch of shit to fill the rest of his resume out???

    • staindFAN

Well according to you he will right? I mean you kind of answered your own question there didn’t you. I say NO of course because I have liked everything he has done thus far and this looks amazing.

  • mikeknowskarate

this did absolutely nothing for me.

  • mav07

It looks pretty bad ass in my opinion. The goofy plot description doesn’t really match the stunning imagery in the teaser but I love stories that involve anything related to what happened in Salem so i’m all game for this movie. I’d be down even if it weren’t a Rob Zombie joint.

  • Aaron Emery

Well, the trailer was beautiful, but I’m not sure I got much from it, I’m also not sure I need to get much from it. I think Zombie has some legitimate skills as a director and knows how to stage a scene really well. As Cooper stated above I am definately getting an Argento feel from it, also the wide/ colorful shots in the hallways remind a lot of a lot of The Shining. Very excited to see the film.

  • Remember-Slithis

This will be hated by most of you before you actually see it to hate it.I have a feeling I’m going to love this for the weirdness.I don’t get Instant Cult Classic vibe.I hope I’m wrong about that.I like Zombies films. So I can hear the fanboy cries. But I do think this is going to be a hot mess!

  • Special-Creature

As a film maker you should make the kind of films you would enjoy-You would too. It always amazes me how noone notices their own “self importance” when calling someone elses work “pretentious.”

    • wehoaks

Oh please. It is pretentious. A true filmmaker knows when their work is shit. Rob Zombie jizzes and shits on his script pages and calls it art. Maybe if he got out of his own ass and let someone else pen his ideas I wouldn’t call him pretentious. Until then, I’ll take another pass on this so-called filmmaker.

  • mav07

I think it says something when I want to watch the trailer again and again to try and take everything in, and it’s just the TEASER. I hope the movie has the same effect.

    • I had the same reaction. I’ve been highly anticipating this. I watched the trailer, and eh, kinda disappointing trailer and left. Then I got a strange urge to watch it again. Before I knew it, I watched it like 5 times, and im not sure why. It’s very peculiar.

  • djblack1313

there’s no question about it that Zombie, like RES EVIL’s Paul Anderson, has an amazing eye for visuals. now i say this as someone who actually really likes his H2, but just like Anderson, Zombie’s not a good screenplay writer. i’m not bashing Zombie. i happily plan on seeing SALEM in the theaters but i’m starting to think he’s really only made for music videos. maybe.

    • doomas10

Finally somebody else has noticed the things I have! H2 was actually awesome. I do not understand the hate although I recognise the entire different take on the MM character could piss some people off as well as the brutal violence that mostly occurs off screen. Paul WS Anderson is a great director but as a screenwriter he is completely average. Just take a look in Event Horizon!

      • djblack1313

        doomas10, EXACTLY! 🙂

      • divisionbell

No no no…it wasn’t a different take on Michael. It was an entirely different character with the name Michael tacked on. H2 was ok, but should not have been a halloween film. Give it another title and let it be just another film in the long line of white trash horror films that Zombie is so intent on making. House of 1000 Corpses was good (and I actually liked Sheri in it). Devils rejects was decent as well. Half of halloween was good and the first 15 minutes of H2 was good. The man has style, knows how to make wonderfully brutal and disturbing murders, but any time his characters open their mouths the film just crumbles. He couldn’t write a script to save his life. This is a man who needs to be paired up with another director. Let him handle the visuals and intensity of the film, but for the love of god let someone else handle the dialogue.

        • doomas10

I recognise that he does have some repeating elements-white trash talking family, but I wouldn’t go as far and say that his scripts are lame and bad. The devil’s rejects had a solid script and the psychoanalysis of Myers was actually pretty spot on in terms of reality talking. I think he can get excellent performances from old school actors – Brad Douriff, Malcom McDowel – who was perfect as Loomis etc. This one features no white trash family as far as I have heard so that would be interesting to see it. Just watched the trailer again and looks so freaky imaginery. And as for the take of Myers I liked it a lot because I would be bored to death to watch another slasher film with Myers killing teenagers on 2009. At least he is not copying anyone and tries to bring something new to the table. While far from a perfect movie, the visual palette and the intesity of some scenes was incredible.

  • Da fuck… did I just watch…

  • Danny-E

I’ll wait to I hear the dialogue and see the acting. Where Zombie really fails is his writing and acting. Until he fixes those … he’s a one trick pony.

    • VampireJack

Yeah, the dialogue of the movie was pretty much non-existent.
Perhaps it’s so we don’t suspect it’s yet another “motherfucking witches, I’ll kick your goddamn asses you trailer trash fuckers!”

      • divisionbell

        So very true!

  • EvilHead1981

I like how it looks, and I would LIKE for this movie to be something more than what Rob usually does, but I just know that, when the movie starts up, and some character(maybe modern or not) opens their mouth…. “I jammed my dick so far up into her cunt I nearly split the fuckin bitch in two! Fuckin TWO! Shit motherfucker, no fuckin lie!”. From the trailer, it LOOKS nice(I do get the Argento vibe too), almost classy. Maybe too classy for Zombie. I just doubt he is capable of really doing something like that without trailer trashin it up. I would love to believe that he CAN do something more than what he usually does, but all his movies have pointed to that not being the case. I’d love for him to prove me wrong.

  • Taboo

For a minute I thought I was watching some random Black Metal music video jeje.. Nahh but seriously, I think it looks interesting.

  • j.c

I can see Argento, but I was getting an even stronger Jean Rollin or Luigi Batzella vibe.

  • ThunderDragoon

Hmm. I don’t know how I feel about it. It could be great or it could be terrible. Time will tell.

  • The sound is horrible on this. And seeing as there is nothing about it posted on any of Rob’s sites, I’m going to guess that this was premature..

  • Nothing333

Seems like Zombie’s tribute to Ken Russell/Hammer films. Interesting. I’ll definitely be checking it out.

  • doomas10

looks fucking awesome. I personally can’t wait for that. I consider Zombie a promising horror director. He has an eye for visuals and I want to see this bizarre weird story unfolded in the big screen. Bring it on!

  • niuq

Looks Amazing! I’m a Rob Zombie ( as a film maker ) fan and this looks pretty incredible to me. I also think Sherri is great. And to those couple of dudes ( I assume ) who like H2, count me in, I liked it too. When I take it out of the Halloween / MM context and watch it independently of that, its actually pretty stunning. Super stoked about Salem!

    • doomas10

      Amen brother

  • Beelzebubba

Not a good sign when over half of the horror “fans” seem to not like the trailer. From what I just watched only hardcore fans will show up for the movie. Of course only a 1.5 million budget, should recoup in the first weekend and go on to make some cash on the cult dvd market. VIVA LA ZOMBIE!!

  • markajacoby

So it either looks like a bad Dario Argento film or an old Thrill Kill Kult video… Can’t decide which.

  • ShinJoe

I’m seeing this. The trailer was very ambiguous, but the premise of a DJ playing an old record and awakening an ancient evil seems like a good excuse for some random violence and mayhem by creepy people in corpse make up and leather masks. It won’t be The Shining, but from what I saw in the trailer, it looks like it’ll at least be interesting.

  • MahoganyButcher

I have enjoyed every other Rob Zombie flick so far, this one on the other hand doesn’t quite have the same appeal from the look of the first trailer….I hope I am wrong but we shall see. I do agree that his style looks great from the preview, but I heard some early reviews on this and said that this one is actually all imagery and not all that good. I am somewhat intrigued buy it, but I will prolly end up waiting for it on DVD…

  • Slasha

Mr Zombie just because you have and an amazing DOP & crew (and yes it’s beautifully shot) doesn’t make it a great film. Maybe a good story and descent actors (not your wife) should be considered?! Please stop putting this big budget SHITE out and ripping the kids off or feel my blade!!
Watch V.H.S and learn something please Mr Zombie!!!!!!!!!!

    Ta Ta

    • grayghost

I dont think this is “big budget” at all, from what i hear it was made very indie like House of 1k corps.
      ..”feel your blade’..really

      • It has a lot smaller budget than Ho1K had a $7 million budget, this had a $2 million budget

      • Slasha

Yes greyghost I did say feel my blade!!! Sad your seem to be sticking up for Mr Zombie. He has backing and he still can’t make a good movie. Look at Sam Raimi, Ty West and the rest of the lovely people envolved in V.H.S!! It is possible to make great scary engaging horror films on a much less budget than Mr Zombie. The fact is he’s crap at making films!!!

        • doomas10

V.H.S was terrible and laughable. Zombie eats VHS type films for breakfast

          • Slasha

Really dude!!! There’s no accounting for taste then obviously!!!

  • Jasonicus

What the fuck is this shit?

  • I think it looks awesome and in all actuality, I think it looks like Zombie has grown as a film maker. This looks like his seemingly random ways are now carefully calculated. It’s like a Pollack painting; looks disjointed and something anyone could do, but is clearly and meticulously done for a reason that will be hard to duplicate by anyone other than him. Reminds me of when I first saw the trailer for Refn’s “Valhalla Rising.”

  • Zombie-Killa

My God Rob Zombie is one sick fuck.

Zombie’s wife is my only concern. I don’t think she’s a bad actress, but I don’t trust her to carry this film as the leading lady.

Creepy trailer, and I’m looking forward to this. Hopefully, The Lords Of Salem will receive a theatrical release in the states, because I want to see this in theaters.

    • staindFAN

Worry not. I think Mrs. Zombie will do just fine.

  • djblack1313

    over on

a site notorious for negative/hate comments in just about any news/article, i’m shocked and happy that nearly every comment for this trailer is PRO-this movie! 99% of the comments are people saying they think it looks great and how cool it looks. that’s saying something because again, on that site if it’s not about Batman, The Avengers or The Hobbit they will rip it apart.

    • Zombie-Killa

djblack, totally agree. That website is a popular hangout for Nolan and Marvel fanboys. COMPLETELY shocked to see so much positive feedback.

Trailer looks great, but after watching it for a second time, I’m start to sense some strange similarities to House Of 1,000 Corpses…….

  • Joe-Banger

I see some interesting comments and opinions here, the trailere does look good and and it has similarities to othere films Ive seen but it does need a strong story with good actors over all. Rob is probably afraid of not casting Sheri because she will probably divorce him and take everything from him including all his years of hard work! LOL! All jokes aside I will see this in a local theatre and give my 2 cents later on down the road.

  • K-Dogg

I think Staindfan is Rob Zombie.

  • wow im kind of disappointed, i had my hopes up high

  • Joe-Banger

Relax people and worry not, its only the first real trailer! Or would most of you prefer that most of the films best parts be shown in the trailers like most other films these days?

can’t believe i overlooked this… that trailer was amazing. i’m really looking forward to seeing this now

  • Exhaton

The trailer kinda changed my perspective on what I thought the film was going to be/be about. Regardless, looks like it’s going to be a visually stunning piece of work. I love Zombies’ films and I know (hope, actually) this won’t disappoint me.

  • Alex † Von’Fratt

I’m sorry, but Rob should’ve continued on with the Halloween series…

  • zog71

Okay, so I didn’t read all that was said about this movie. My opinion is that I have no idea what is going on. I read the synopsis, but what I watched doesn’t match anything I have read. That doesn’t mean I’m not interested, just not sure what to think. For the most part I like Zombie’s work. “House of a 1000 Corpses” is my least favorite of his. Thought it was a bunch of earlier horror movies put together. His “Halloween” movies I did like, even #2. This trailer says nothing to me, but I am interested because it is a Rob Zombie film.

  • MachetAY

While I don’t think he’s perfect, who is, I do like Rob Zombies movies… a lot. He always makes a great looking movie and he has a passion for horror that bleeds into his work. Sometimes maybe a little to much. In the end he makes an entertaining movie and thats why I go to the movies.

Lords almost looks like an old school Hammer movie. It has a haze to it thats seems to give it a creepy feel.

Has he ever said what happened to T-Rex and The Blob??

  • CruduxCruo

It looks like most of you are looking at a picture of a piece of steak and deciding if it is the best tasting you’ve ever had simply by looking at the picture…….Wait till you see the movie! Trailers=hype

  • Googopqp

Saw some Meleis Trip to the Moon gotta respect that

  • KaiSan

The trailer looks great IMO, but I’ve seen a lot of great looking trailers turn out to be utter shit movies.

  • Deadite4Life

Now, hold on. Isn’t this the premise of Hocus Pocus?

  • Seth_Adams

Rob Zombie just needs to stop. Every movie he has made has been utter trash to me. I just think he needs to retire. His Halloween movies just hurt my soul.
