Opening in limited theaters November 23 is Sacha Gervasi’s Hitchcock, “a love story about one of the most influential filmmakers of the last century, Alfred Hitchcock and his wife and partner Alma Reville.” The film takes place during the making of Hitchcock’s seminal movie Psycho.
And now we have the first official trailer for the film. Anthony Hopkins plays Hitchcock of course, and I’m not sure I can fault his performance – but I’m not sold on the makeup. That being said, this looks like an interesting slice of his life. I always prefer when biopics focus on one or two achievements rather than the subject’s whole life.
The project is based on the non-fiction book by Stephen Rebello that tracks how Hitchcock, at the height of his game as a director, decided to make a “lowly” horror movie. No studio wanted to touch it initially, so Hitchcock scrounged for financing by himself. The movie, of course, became one of his biggest hits and one of the most influential of all time. Scarlett Johansson plays Janet Leigh, Jessica Biel as Vera Miles, and James D’Arcy as Norman Bates himself, Tony Perkins. Helen Mirren, Toni Collette, Michael Stuhlbarg, Michael Wincott and Kurtwood Smith also star.
