The International Fantasy Film Festival takes place in the faraway snowy mountains of Gerardmer in France. This year’s 20th edition took place from January 30th to February 3rd. Oscar Rindlisbacher reports.
The following were selected for jury to help elect the winner among the 9 films who took part of the official competion: The French-American actor Christophe Lambert, president of the Jury; Directors Pascal Laugier (Martyrs, The Tall Man) and Xavier Gens (Frontier(s)).
Over 40 Films were playing in the festival; 35 000 spectators and horror-fans visited the small ski resort for another edition of shiver, dreams and mystery.
Not only fans but also many guests and professionnals are always present; Like every year Dead Crossroads ghost show creator Fabien Delage was here, preparing the 2nd season of his show. Shaun of the Dead British actor Simon Pegg received a tribute from the festival.
The most successful film was Mama, telling the story about two sisters followed by an evil presence. This is the first film from Argentinian director Andres Muschietti, and produced by Guillermo del Toro. Mama was awarded by the Grand Prize, Audience Award and the région Lorraine Student Prize.
Jury Prize went to The End by Jorge Torregrossa and Berberian Sound Studio by Peter Strickland. Peter also won the Critics’ Prize.
Best Short Film Grand Prize went to “Death Of A Shadow” by belgian Tom Van Avermaet. The american movie You’re Next by Adam Wingard, home invasion style, was applauded many times during its show. It was seen as a favorite for the upcoming awards, but at the end only received the SyFy Jury Prize. -Oscar Rindlisbacher
