[TV] Are You Watching “Hemlock Grove”? What Do YOU Think?!

Netflix premiered Hemlock Grove,” from producer Eli Roth (who also directed the pilot) today. As is Netflix’s business model, all 13 episodes are now available. I imagine some of you are working your way through the show right now. I haven’t had time to watch it yet (I’m hoping to check out at least a few episodes later today) but I want to know what you think. Is it any good? Also, how do you feel about the entire series becoming available at once? Is this how you want to consume your television?

“Hemlock Grove is a riveting one-hour murder mystery that revolves around the residents of a former Pennsylvania steel town. When 17-year-old Brooke Bluebell is brutally murdered, any of Hemlock’s peculiar inhabitants – or killer creatures – could be suspects. Through the investigation, the town’s seamier side is exposed, revealing nothing is what it seems. Beautiful, terrifying and graphic, Hemlock Grove is unlike anything else in its genre.” From Hostel and Cabin Fever director Eli Roth, the series stars Famke Janssen, Dougray Scott, Bill Skarsgård, Landon Liboiron, Penelope Mitchell and Freya Tingley.

  • Lonmonster

Just watched the first episode so far. Definitely has a unique style and tone. Reminds me of a cross between Twin Peaks and Are You Afraid Of The Dark?

    • Evan3

@Lonmonster – Wow, Are you afraid of the Dark was one of my favorite shows as a kid. Then again, I haven’t re-watched it since then (so I can’t really remark on the actual quality of the series). So, I’m not sure whether your comment is meant as praise.

      • Lonmonster

I love Are You Afraid Of The Dark? but I meant Hemlock Grove is similar in that it’s super campy. Especially in later episodes.

  • Bryno

I’m gonna likely give this a chance. Can’t speak for others, but I’m a fan of the Netflix model of releasing everything at once, especially with a dramatic type series. I don’t like long gaps between episodes.

  • statik107

I just watched the first episode and I love the look and feel. I’m hooked already.

  • Lion7718

I’ve watched 3 episodes so far, I’m not sure where I stand yet.
I’ll watch them all either way. One thing I will say now is that Famke Janssen’s accent sucks ‘balls’…maybe this will be one of those times when season 2 starts her accent will magically be gone. 😉

  • djblack1313

i hope this ends up online soon! i’m dying to watch it.

    • James-Alan

It is online. It’s on Netflix.

Get a job and maybe you can afford the eight bucks a month.

      • Nothing333

Yeah it’s kind of hard to justify pirating Netflix when it’s such a great deal

        • James-Alan

For the amount of movies/television you’re getting, it really is a great deal. And now they’re creating their own exclusive content, which I think is awesome.

      • djblack1313

James, nope. i’ll torrent it just to piss you off. LOL. have a great day my friend. 🙂

        • James-Alan

No, you’ll continue to torrent because you’re a thief. You’d still be doing it even if I hadn’t commented.

It doesn’t piss me off; I just think you’re a lowlife douchebag.

And I’m having a terrific day, thanks!

          • djblack1313

LOL! sure it doesn’t. LOL. i love you too, handsome.

          • Mr.Mirage

Right. Some of us torrent, then purchase so we don’t get suckered into buying or paying for crap. The majority of what I have torrented is now on DVD or blu-ray. Except for crap. I don’t financially support crap.

            And I delete when done.

djblack1313: see you at the Bay. 🙂

  • ThunderDragoon

I’ve only watched the first episode so far. Don’t care for it now, but hopefully it picks up. I’ll probably watch all 12.

  • James-Alan

I’ve watched the first episode. It’s a bit strange, none of the characters are particularly likable and some of the acting is pretty god-awful (what the hell is up with Famke Janssen’s accent…I cringe every time she speaks).

I’ll watch one or two more episodes to give it a fair chance, but I doubt that I’ll end up finishing it.

  • Joe-Banger

LOL @ djblack1313! Your awesome! I love the way deflected a possible flame war! And Im curious about this show as well. I wish I could get a job and afford eight bucks a month as well. Then again I have a friend who has NetFlix so I can watch it at his house. So Im a bum not a thief or a low life douchebag! LOL

    • James-Alan

I wasn’t trying to start a flame war, Joe. It’s just irritating to see people so blatantly brag about stealing content, especially when said content is so inexpensive.

People like djblack ruin things for the rest of us—those who are willing to play by the rules—when companies decide to start making us jump through hoops to access their services.

And if he’s going to illegally download stuff he should at least keep his mouth shut about it.

Admittedly, the “douchebag” comment was over the line, and for that I do apologize.

  • Kangas

I just added it to my queue, but I’m not hearing too much good about it. Hopefully it’s just critics bashing horror, like normal, and I’ll enjoy it. Definitely a fan of having it all up there at one time. (kind of mirrors the way I watch TV–Tivo 6 episodes of a show and then just watch them all at once)

  • Skratchy

Two episodes in and I dig it so far. Not the best thing ever but there’s a lot of cool imagery, creepy shit and great gore. Kinda thinking of it as True Blood and The Munsters bastard offspring.

  • boyoutcast

I’ve gotten through two episodes as well. It’s a mash of good and bad right now. Famke Jansen’s accent is really awful, but it won’t ruin the show for me. The good outweighs the bad. And that transformation in Episode 2 was really quite bad-ass. I am hooked so far!

  • Gtrad78

I dig it so far. This show has alot of different inspirations. Ironically it has a similar feel to Ti West’s Cabin Fever 2. Which, to me, felt like Strangers With Candy covered in blood. Seems like it be a fun one. Some folks are gonna take this too seriously.

  • statik107

I really don’t get the hate for this show. Get over the accent it doesn’t kill the show at all. I find this refreshing and if we keep complaining about little things (Walking Dead, etc.) they will stop making horror TV. Stop biting the hand that feeds you or get some money and produce your own show…
