I only ever managed to get about three quarters of the way through Shattered Memories, primarily because it released during a time when I was getting bored with the console. I never finished a lot of great Wii games simply because they were on the Wii, and while I eventually went back after I sold my Wii and watched someone else play through the bits I never got to, I’ll always regret not experiencing them first-hand.
What I enjoyed most about this game was how brave developer Climax Studios was with it. They weren’t afraid to mix things up, and the end result was a survival horror game that actually managed to be innovative. The psychological test you had to take was particularly interesting, as was the Otherworld’s icy new aesthetic. The only real downside was how monotonous the chase sequences became, as you were forced to run through a labyrinthine environment, one after another, while being chased by the same creatures every single time.
I really enjoyed Downpour. It’s a pity it didn’t do well enough for Vatra to follow it up with a game that could have improved on the handful of issues I had with it. The music, which was placed in the very capable hands of Dexter composer Daniel Licht, was incredible. It was pure aural pleasure, because it managed to sound different, while at the same time staying true to the unsettling, atmospheric creepiness fans loved about Yamaoka’s soundtracks. It was familiar and unfamiliar at the same time. The game might have had a rocky beginning — okay, the first hour is just plain bad — but once you actually make it to Silent Hill, things improve significantly.
My biggest complaint with it is a serious one for a Silent Hill game. I loved the open-world setting, side quests and story, but one of the staples of the franchise, the enemies, were a bland bunch of predictable and uninspired creatures. Outside of the weird ethereal sex dolls and maybe the final boss, every enemy was entirely forgettable.
