With Revelations coming to nearly every console on the planet in just three short weeks (May 21), I’ve been thinking — what are the best Resident Evil games? I wanted to rank the entire series, but then I remembered there are significantly more games in Capcom’s legendary horror franchise then there are in Silent Hill. I’ll also freely admit I haven’t played every game released to-date, nor do I have the time (or the will) to go through the few I missed to see where they place.

So, out of sheer laziness, I decided to choose the five best games and rank them from “worst” to best. Check out my list after the break, and feel free to disagree and offer your own in the comments!

Resident Evil Code: Veronica X is a fantastic game. It features one of my personal favorite characters, the undead ass-kicking Claire Redfield, who unlike her brother, doesn’t actually require comically large muscles to get the job done. All she needs is a few slick moves like the one she pulls at the beginning of Veronica — you know the scene I’m talking about, where she drops the gun, falls, picks it up before it hits the ground and fires it at the explosives behind the goons. That scene was so ridiculously cool it was eventually reenacted by Milla Jovovich in Resident Evil: Apocalypse.

However, I’m not a fan of Steve, so this makes #5. That guy was so annoying.

Having to live up to the astronomically high expectations set by its two predecessors must have made developing Nemesis moderately stressful, but I think it’s safe to say Capcom lived up to them. I wouldn’t say the Resident Evil games have ever excelled in the area of storytelling, but I’d say this game came the closest to bringing the most intriguing premise so far. The way everything happens in a slow, methodical way really ratchets up the tension, which becomes even more intense once you realize you’re being hunted by Umbrella’s newest toy, the Nemesis.

I agree with this list of the best Resident Evil games, but I don’t agree with the order. Resident Evil 1 in my opinion is the best. Sure it could use a remake. Nothing was better though then the original creepy mansion, story and slow moving zombies that lurked in that house. Then it goes RE2, RE3, RE4 and then Code Veronica. I think many think RE4 is the best because the gameplay and graphics improved, however that game was the start of stepping away from the horror of the series and into the more action style of what the series has become today.

    • REmake

You realize there is a Resident Evil 1 remake on the Gamecube. It’s the best game in the series in my humble opinion.

Totally agree with you, the GC version was the best.

I would have probably put the remake of the original RE at the top of my list, only because it took what was amazing of the original game and expanded on it in a million different ways. On top of that, it still felt like a RE game, even with all the bells and whistles.

I loved RE4 and I always will, but it never felt like “Resident Evil” to me. Not the Resident Evil I fell in love with, anyway.

Aaand I love that you put Code Veronica on the list, only because it totally does not get the recognition it deserves. I’m almost ashamed to admit how long it took to figure out what the passcode was at the end of the game.

i dont agree with this list and never understood why everyone liked resident evil 4 so much it was nothing like a resident evil game. The original resident evil 4 would of been much better.

    • REmake

Are you talking about the demo gameplay Capcom showed one year where Leon was walking through a mansion and getting attacked by baby doll? …yeah, that looked just great…

Resident Evil 4, followed very closely by 3 are the best to me.

Good list, I mostly agree. I would maybe put 2 over 4. The only thing I don’t get is the love towards part 3. It felt – apart from Nemesis – a bit like a rehash for me, storywise. The story of part 4 was the much needed fresh breath of air. You can say what you want about 4, the story was great. Code: Veronika X is also an underrated game, the plot was absolutely gripping. I can be wrong about part 3, I haven’t played it since it came out, so if you disagree, enlighten me.

I would probably put 2 and REmake above 4, but it’s a really close race. Even if 4 was a big departure from the previous games, it’s still a fantastic game. It’s a shame that they missed the mark with 5 and 6. UGH @ those regenerators!

The kid inside me would probably say RE2 is the best, but the current me has to say that RE3 is my favorite. Jill is one of my favorite heroes and Nemesis is my all time favorite RE enemy. Plus, the uneasiness you feel throughout the WHOLE game wondering if Nemesis is going to be there is terrifying! I tense up so much when I have to run from him. RE4 was good, but not great, I felt. That’s when the franchise started to go into action territory so it slipped when it came to the horror aspect. I mean, as a game in general it was great, but as part of the RE franchise, it was just good. If that makes sense. Have to admit, the part where you first encounter the Regenerator is very creepy, though. And hey, don’t talk bad about my Chrissy! He’s hot, damn it. XD

  • REmake

Resident Evil Remake is definitely the best game in the series. It’s scary and hard as hell, and the visuals are still beautiful. I really wish the series would return to the style of the original 3 games- at least for an offshoot game.

I stopped after 2. I briefly played 4 and a buddy brought over 5 when it came out. Wasn’t diggin’ either.

  • Milk

I really enjoyed 5… But mainly because I played it coop with friends and kept hitting them with the stun rod until they cursed me out. So. Much. Fun.
