R.I.P. Slayer Guitarist Jeff Hanneman Passes Away At Age 49

Terrible news has hit the metal world as it has been announced that Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman, who was an original member, has passed away at age 49 due to liver failure. Hanneman had not been a touring member of Slayer since 2011, when he contracted necrotizing fasciitis, also known as the flesh-eating disease. Continuing health problems would not allow him to rejoin his bandmates.

The band posted the following message on their Facebook: “Slayer is devastated to inform that their bandmate and brother, Jeff Hanneman, passed away at about 11AM this morning near his Southern California home. Hanneman was in an area hospital when he suffered liver failure. He is survived by his wife Kathy, his sister Kathy and his brothers Michael and Larry, and will be sorely missed.

Our Brother Jeff Hanneman, May He Rest In Peace (1964 – 2013)

Our deepest condolences and thoughts go out to the family, friends, and fans of Jeff Hanneman.

I’m no medical expert, but I wonder if the necrotizing facsitis caused him to have the liver failure or if it was from heavy drinking. Either way R.I.P. Slayer has always been my favorite out of the big 4. They put on some of the best shows live and Jeff Hanneman doesn’t get nearly as much credit as he deserves.

You’ll be missed. Jamming Seasons In The Abyss as I type \m/

    Wow. Just wow.
Another legend of the metal world has passed on too soon – much too soon.
I think I’ll be pissing off my neighbours today with all day SLAYER marathon.
    R.I.P.

What now for SLAYER though? Do they continue as a band, or do they disband?

You can kill the man but never the music. He will always be remembered in our minds and felt within our hearts. His legacy is his immortality. R.I.P Jeff Hanneman.

Saw Tool play here in Sydney on Friday night and they dedicated ‘Stinkfist’ to Jeff, very fitting tribute. RIP.

Slayer was the only ‘big four’ band that kept it real. They never experimented and sold out one way or another like the rest of ‘em. I met Hanneman twice and he couldn’t have been a cooler dude. He was a real innovator. Slayer and metal will never be the same. Slayer should retire now.
