You Won’t Be Able To Transfer Arcade Games To Xbox One

If you’re a proud owner of an Xbox 360 with plans on upgrading to the Xbox One when it launches later this year, you may want to hold onto your 360. In an interview with Gamespot, Microsoft Game Studios VP Phil Spencer confirmed there will be no way to transfer your XBLA games to the new console, but “Those games will continue to run on your Xbox 360 for as long as your Xbox 360 runs,” he said.

My library of arcade games has grown substantially over the years, so this news is a little frustrating. Microsoft knows there are plenty gamers like me out there, but they don’t seem to mind. “The box is not backward compatible and we think for somebody who invests in a large digital library that you want to keep your [Xbox 360].” This decision seems especially odd seeing as we will be able to transfer our 360 gamer profiles and achievements to the Xbox One. Maybe Sony will allow this, seeing as their PS4 is so game-centric.

I’m wondering when Sony will say something negative because Microsoft just keeps cranking out the bad news.

    • Sirengx

Sony won’t need to say anything negative. Microsoft is burying themselves (so is Nintendo).

  • Canucklehead

If Sony wasn’t such a mess they would have buried this by now. Still time though. Pricing is gonna be very interesting when it comes though.

Of all the shoddy announcements Microsoft has made, this is probably the one that makes me the most angry. These companies push toward digital gaming saying that although we won’t own physical copies of the games, at least the game will be tied to our accounts at the end of the day. Clearly, this was a lie. We’ll be using the same Xbox profile (which these games are SUPPOSED to be tied to), yet lose what we’ve purchased unless we decide to keep the Xbox 360 lying around? What happened to the whole All-In-One thing they were going for? There’s no point in it if I have to keep my 360 just to play games I’ve already purchased through Xbox Live.

The most maddening thing about it is that you know they’re going to be releasing all of these games again on the Xbox One, probably very quickly. It’s a money grab. They really do expect us to buy these games again. I’ve felt pretty negative about the Xbox One since the big reveal, but this is basically a deal breaker for me.

it’s almost like Microsoft doesn’t want to be in the video game biz anymore, I love it! 🙂
