If I were a betting man, I’d have put everything on black, and black would be Sony’s sci-fi thriller Elysium, in theaters August 9. From District 9 director Neill Blomkamp, the pic looks visually stunning, and beyond exciting. For me, it’s the clear winner of summer “must-see” blockbusters.
With a rock star cast lead by Matt Damon, it’s truly interesting to read whom Blomkamp originally wanted for the lead role, and both of them truly are “rock stars”.
Before Elysium landed Matt Damon, Blomkamp was considering a smaller budgeted version the movie and thought of Die Antwoord’s Ninja, above right, for the lead, The Playlist learned in an interview with Blomkamp. When the rapper declined (he would’ve had to use an American accent), Blomkamp then went to Eminem, below, who would only do it if the movie shot in Detroit.
I especially love hearing that Eminem, as rich as he is, still supports his home town. And let’s be honest, “I Fink” the entire Die Antwoord group is visually interesting, and perfect for a movie of Elysium‘s nature (although, for me to be excited, I’d have to see Yolandi Visser, above left, star as well).
In it, “In the year 2159, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Delacourt (Jodie Foster) will stop at nothing to preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium – but that doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in by any means they can. Max (Matt Damon) agrees to take on a life-threatening mission, one that could bring equality to these polarized worlds.”
