Light as an ally isn’t necessarily new to the horror genre. There are even a handful of games, like Alan Wake and Alone in the Dark, that have entire systems that revolve around it. In Candles, the light isn’t just a friend, as well as a fantastic way for seeing in the dark — it’s also necessary for your survival. For the dangerous imp-like creatures that call this house their home aren’t too fond of the light. Most of the time.
