[WTF] Are You Too Stupid To Enjoy ‘Snowpiercer?!?!

Four years later I’m still fuming over Dimension “Extreme’s” half-assed, “Unrated” DVD-only release of Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo brilliantly bloody Inside, which was edited down by 7 minutes to get more units into Blockbusters. (Yes, the “unrated” version was actually trimmed down.)

The “Harvey Scissorhands” joke isn’t anything new in Hollywood, but maybe it will be to some of you younger readers. Either way, it strikes again, this time affecting the release of The Host director Bong Joon-ho’s Snowpiercer, which is absolutely kicking ass in Korean theaters. Bong’s 126 minute film, starring Chris Evans as the leader of a revolt on a train that carries the last survivors of the human race after an experiment to end global warming fails, opened in Korea on August 1, selling nearly 3.3 million tickets in the first five days for a gross of US$21.4 million! The cast also includes Song Kang-ho, Tilda Swinton, Ko Ah-sung, Jamie Bell, John Hurt, Ed Harris and Octavia Spencer.

According to IF, The Weinstein Company is demanding Bong slash the running time by 20 minutes for the version to be released in TWC’s territories. And while we should understand that movie distribution is a business, it’s still frustrating as a film fan to learn that a director’s work is being “dumbed down” for the masses. Seriously. Check this…

TWC people have told Bong that their aim is to make sure the film ‘will be understood by audiences in Iowa … and Oklahoma,’” English writer and film festival programmer Tony Rayns told IF.

Leaving aside the issue of what Weinstein thinks of its audience, it seems to say the least anomalous that the rest of the English-speaking world has to be dragged down to the presumed level of American mid-west hicks,” added Rayns, who attended the film’s premiere in Seoul and spoke with the filmmaker, whose credits include The Host and Memories of Murder.

According to Rayns, Bong said the cuts would eliminate much of the character detail, which would make the film seem more like an action movie. Weinstein is also adding opening and closing voice-overs (you know, so explain to “the dummies” what’s going on).

Nobody (least of all Bong himself) is optimistic that his rear-guard actions against the ‘Weinstein version’ will get his original version released in English-speaking territories, but I hope that Oz, like the UK, will fight the good fight to protest Weinstein’s cuts,” said Rayns.

He jokingly concludes talking about the director’s cut: “If the ‘Weinstein version’ flops in theatres, it may at least speed up release of what I’m sure Weinstein will call ‘the director’s cut’ on Blu-ray and DVD.

What do you guys think of THIS?!

This is why we can’t have nice things. This is also why the rest of the world thinks we’re nothing but a bunch of idiots. Ugh… I hate this.

  • Wolvenmist

I’m from the southern part of Oklahoma and it’s comments like what TWC said that show that they really have no idea what their audience wants. I understand that business is business and decisions have to be made, but sometimes I just loose faith in them when it comes to international films.

  • doomas10

That really pisses me off! Weinstein are known to change a lot in the films that they produce. Look what happened to “Gangs of NY”. Only QT told them to go f*** themselves with Kill Bill. Seriously, I understand that making movies is a business and they treat it as such but when you are having a foreign director delivering his own signature style to American you do not force him to change the entire film – see what happened with John Woo’s hard target and everyone’s else first attempt to Hollywood. Lame. I will wait for the blu ray edition.

  • horrorking95

Oh what wonderful news! Thank God they’re cutting down! I’d be far too stupid to see an extra 20 minutes of character development. That’s the last thing I want in a film! I want it ideally to be an all-action and no brains type film. Fabulous.

What do we need story and character development for when we have EXPLOSIONS!?!?! :|

  • divisionbell

Wow those comments are incredibly insulting. How about letting Americans watch the full movie and make up their own minds?

And I’m now incredibly bothered that I never knew that my unrated copy of Inside was cut….

    • Sandor-Clegane

It’s not cut, he’s full of shit. As long as you purchased the version that says “UNRATED” on the front and has the hour-long documentary you should be fine. Unless the version they released in France was censored as well, as I’ve compared the two.

      • sweetooth

If you bought it at blockbuster, then sadly Mr D. is correct. They still packaged it as the “unrated” version, but Blockbuster’s unrated cut is in fact censored by 7 minutes. If you got your disc anywhere else you are fine.

        Cute huh?

        • sweetooth

Scratch that, Sandor-Clegane is correct, the blockbuster cover is different.

I was sure I’d read that Blockbuster used the same cover even though it was cut, but I guess not.

Check out http://www.movie-censorship.com to read about the differences and the whole deal with blockbuster (great site by the way)

Well the Weinsteins are all about money (Keep the jewish jokes to yourself, unless they’re funny.) and it’s shown on how they’ve handled all there movies, so this is no surprise. And they are right, sadly, that americans are to dumb for thinking movies. Hell, just look at all of Darren Aronofsky’s films till his Black Swan finally did good. Americans want big and flashy no thinkers like something by Michael Bay or JJ Abrams, and then complain about it later. Not trying to sound anti-american, cause honestly I don’t give to much of a shit about that stuff, but when it comes to smart films its always been a slow burn here for ticket sales. But I do agree with the rest of you here, fuck the Weinsteins for not having any balls to release a quality film out here and just making it harder for future brilliant directors to get there films distributed out here in the states.

Can someone please correct MrDisgusting on this? It’s getting annoying how he keeps on trumpeting this when it’s blatantly false.

The BLOCKBUSTER version — and I’ve seen this, having been there — is in fact cut. The cover is different showing only the shadow of the scissors as opposed to the actual tools, plus there are no features on the discs. This version is ONLY available at Blockbuster.

The UNRATED version — the one available to purchase — is uncut. I’ve compared it with the French Blu-ray and there’s nothing missing.

I’m no fan of Harvey Weinstein but this is just shoddy journalism on your part.

I completely understand the argument here, but they kind of negate their argument with their own prejudiced comment. So they start of by saying “Leaving aside the issue of what Weinstein thinks of its audience” so far so good. Then we get “to the presumed level of American mid-west hicks.” So let me get this straight, the Weinstein company is treating people like they are stupid. Rayns doesn’t like this. Rather than say something like “these people are not stupid” he decides that the best response is to call them hicks?

Four years later I’m still fuming over the effusive praise others lavish on the incredibly generic Inside. Much like Ils (aka Them) it seems as if English speaking audiences and critics are so beguiled by the French language that they don’t bother to take issue with the lazy writing and the nonstop torrent of cliches within.

As for this…congratulations to TWC on underestimating moviegoers yet again and soiling a perfectly good film’s theatrical release. When will these fools understand that you will NEVER OBTAIN ALL DEMOGRAPHICS. When you cut a film to pieces in order to make it palatable to larger audiences, all you really do is make it less palatable to the people who already wanted to see it. The end result is a movie that god damn no one enjoys, because cutting 20 minutes from a film is never going to make someone enjoy it who wouldn’t have just dug the real thing anyway. I don’t know why these morons think that slicing a chunk off the running time is the magic bullet for making a product appealing to the masses. Especially when it is ALREADY A FUCKING SUCCESS.
