[R.I.P.] Karen Black (1939 – 2013)

In some sad news today, it seems that legendary actress Karen Black has passed away at the age of 74 after a battle with cancer. Horror fans no doubt know her from films like Some Guy Who Kills People, Trilogy of Terror, Soulkeeper, Burnt Offerings, Mirror Mirror, Invaders from Mars and of course House of 1000 Corpses.

A versatile actress, Black also had notable roles in such cinema classics as Bob Rafelson’s Five Easy Pieces and Dennis Hopper’s Easy Rider (both films co-starring with Jack Nicholson) as well as Robert Altman’s Nashville.

Head below for a montage of her work.

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS FUCKING SUCKS! i adored Karen Black. i knew she had done one of the asking the public for help/fund drives to help her get to Europe for some cancer treatments and i hoped the treatments had worked/helped.

@djblack1313, your right! cancer sucks ass! I wish I never started smoking 20 years ago, but Im determined to stop now more than ever! My Grandma had 3 forms of cancer at 80 years old, and a few in laws also had it. 74 is a good number though, I hope I live that long. RIP Karen Black.

That is truly disappointing new. Trilogy of terror and invaders from Mara were huge films for me growing up. RIP.

Around 2am this morning I could not sleep and I just randomly chose my House of 1000 corpses blu ray to put in and was thinking to myself how good mother Firefly was and how she did not do the sequel. Weird how things work.

Sigh. Sometime lurker here, finally prompted to comment by this really sad news. As a young kid, Trilogy Of Terror used to play in syndication on local Pittsburgh stations on random Saturday afternoons, and I probably saw it at least five times while growing up. Of course, she did so many other great movies, as well (Five Easy Pieces, Come Back To The Five And Dime, Jimmy Dean… etc.)

djblack1313, I read just this week that her husband was planning to take her to Europe for treatment, but in the end, she was just too sick to make the flight.

If you really want your heart to break, read this final blog post by her husband (literally posted two days before her death), who sat by her bedside through the entire cancer ordeal:

ChartRigger, thanx very much for the info (albeit sad info).:) i can’t even bring myself to read her husband’s blog. i lost my mom to cancer a year and a half ago (to cancer. then lost my little brother to it 2 months after she passed) and spent her last week, day & night at her side (in the hospice)….my heart breaks for anyone going through this. i never thought cancer would affect my life too much but it’s taken 3 immediate family members from me.

Five Easy Pieces is one of the greatest American movies ever made.

She and Oliver Reed scared the hell out of me in “Burnt Offerings”. Their portrayal of a dysfunctional couple was creepier than all the supernatural stuff. Thanks for that great performance !

I loved her in house of 1000 corpses and Trilogy of Terror.
R.I.P. Karen Black you will be missed!
