Lady Gaga Releases Eerie, Horror-Fueled Music Video For “Applause”

Love her or hate her, Lady Gaga has proven time and time again that she is very much influenced by the horror genre, something she gives great appreciation to in her music videos. And now with the upcoming release of her new album Artpop (out November 11th via Interscope Records), she is showing her love of the genre once again with the official music video for “Applause”. A series of surreal, almost Lynch-like scenarios are shot in stark black and white with color used to almost shocking effect. Many of the shots call to mind an almost Ingmar Bergman stylistic approach.

Artpop can be pre-ordered here.

    Cool video. I like it.

  • Flash-Over

SO much respect for posting this. Gaga is the best thing to happen to the pop scene in recent years. I wouldn’t be surprised if she did this with Lynch in mind. Woman is mad smart!

    • JonathanBarkan

      Glad you enjoy!

    • jack

she’s not “mad smart”. she’s a shameless mad rip-off artist

  • RubenHilton93

ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME!? Lady Gaga is a top story on this site!? This is fucking ridiculous and she is so irrelevant to what should be on this site.

    • JonathanBarkan

It’s not a top story, just posted on the front page. And did you check out the video? Music aside, it’s very horror-inspired in its presentation. I’d recommend giving it a view!

      • jack

Honestly, the horror value in this clip is minimal. Not worth the overall atrociousness. Lady Gaga is horrifying, agreed, but not the way that actual horror fans appreciate. I have to say that I feel like the music videos posted on BD are often the weakest content and seem like a desperate stretch to fill out the daily content quota. Goddamn Lady Gaga has no place on the front page of BD amongst stories about Friday the 13th, You’re Next and Dead Rising 3! This rubbish is just lowering the sites credibility. Do better or don’t do at all.

        • RubenHilton93

THANK YOU! Exactly my point. There is no reason Lady Gaga should be a front page story on a horror movie web site.

        • chambertlo

Dude, if you don’t like it, there are plenty of other horror sites out there that suit your tastes. Shut up and GTFO.

          • RubenHilton93

            Who are you?

      • RubenHilton93

Yeah I see nothing horror fueled about it. Just about bunch of random stupid outfits and “artistic” lights flashing thrown together with a stupid song.

    • djblack1313

      wow, Ruben, overreact much? LOL.

      • RubenHilton93

LoL I come on here to read about horror. Now I can’t even avoid hearing or seeing things about Lady Gaga on a horror web site? Now i think thats ridiculous.

        • WalkingDeadGuy

You CAN avoid reading the article if you are so bothered by her. No one is making you read it. There’s a lot of articles I don’t read if the headline doesn’t pique my interest. Just scroll past the story, it’s as easy as that. Good lord.

          • RubenHilton93

I didn’t read it I just commented on the it. Your statement is irrelevant to my point. Lady Gaga is not horror or a movie so she doesn’t need to be featured on a horror movie web site about horror MOVIE NEWS.

        • ElmStreetKid93

Haha why aren’t i surprised to see you commenting on this post Ruben LOL!

          • RubenHilton93

LMAO dude come on though Lady Gaga is on here now like this is just too much.

    • chambertlo

You’re opinion is wrong and you should feel bad about it.

  • pyrepunk

Ehhh…slowly becoming an ex fan of her….her style seems to stay the same and gets old, I liked Lina Morgana’s style better it was more rockish….too bad she “fell off a building”.

  • Benatar01

Uggghhhh… I can’t stand that talentless skank!!! I just had to get that out… I feel much better now!!! I know it’s only my opinion and I certainly didn’t mean to enrage any of her “little monsters”. *Shivers and rolls eyes, end scene.

  • Tomie Kawakami

Her music videos are inspired by Marina Abramovic and her pretentious “art”, not the horror genre.

  • xtiandf78

I can’t believe I actually used to like her. Her songs all sound the same (bad) and her music videos are just sequences of over done references and trying too hard visuals. Nothing about her is avant-garde or artistic or interesting.

  • ThunderDragoon

I commend you for posting this, Jonathan, knowing that there would be a bunch of hate comments. Much respect to you. I, for one, really like Lady Gaga. Love the song and the video is cool.

    • JonathanBarkan

I didn’t really expect there to be such a love/hate relationship here but it is pretty entertaining!

      • WolfQueen

I’m loving this new song and the video is great! Gaga will always be a love/hate performer, regardless of what she does.

  • Samaras_Madness

I have noticed an interesting tic in “fan” communities. When we are fans of something; we are die hard, to the grave fans. When we are not fans, a profound ugliness bubbles to the surface. Look, you don’t have to like Lady Gaga, in fact, it’s clear most of the posters here hate her. By tearing her apart you are, by proxy, disparaging an author who just wanted to share something. A great deal of what they do is volunteer, they (and this website) don’t have to post anything. It is a courtesy extended to you. If some content filter through that you don’t like, perhaps you should be strong enough to NOT bitch, and grow up a little bit.

    • J-SiN

People here are too damn funny. I think the song sucks, the video is OK, but I do not feel the need to watch it more than once. I personally feel she just tries too damn hard to be different. With that being said, I think she pales in comparison to that shit Necrosadist that was posted the other day. Talk about trying too hard, those guys set the bar pretty high. But no one bitches about that shit.

It’s kind of like the interview with Danielle Harris. Her top movies were all rather mainstream, which I think is perfectly fine. However when someone else like some of the bands on here list their top 10 movies, they’re blasted for picking mainstream movies. I guess it’s OK because we like Harris?

As far as Ruben goes, I read plenty on here everyday that is not movie related. Thanks for stirring up the pot JB, it’s always great fun to read some of this shit, keep it coming.

      • JonathanBarkan

        I’ll do my best!

  • horrorking95

I don’t think that it’s that horror inspired. I think she has more references in earlier videos. I’m pretty sure the bed on fire in Bad Romance is a nod to Let the Right One In and the ending to her Alejandro video reminds me a lot of the ending to Martyrs but I may be reading into it too much. The swan thing in this video is hilarious and quite Lynchian (whom I love).

You might think I’m a mad fan, but I’m not. My sister is a huge huge fan so I’m constantly surrounded by Lady Gaga and know her quite well. I think she’s a bit of a pretentious idiot as a person and she does shamelessly rip off the likes of Madonna and Cher, but I like some of her music, although I have to agree that a lot sound the same.

  • Catastrophe

I wouldn’t say it’s horror-fueled per se, but it is horror-tinged like a lot of her videos are. Either way, it’s a great mind-trip 🙂

  • chambertlo

There are plenty of horror elements in the video, and it seems like some of the videos are inspired by a Jacob’s Ladder/Dario Argento aesthetic, so it definitely belongs on this site.
Jonathan, don’t pay any mind to the haters who don’t know good music if it kicked them in the balls. It’s about time someone featured a different genre of music that isn’t the typical shitty “death metal/scream-metal/whatever the fuck it’s called I don’t care it sucks”that permeates this site. Bravo to you, sir.

    • JonathanBarkan

Just trying to add some diversity and spice things up a bit here and there, haha!

      • Melodee

I agree. After high school I kinda cooled it on the whole “death metal/scream-metal/whatever the fuck it’s called” lol. I’m not saying I’m Goo Goo for GAGA but I can appreciate a good video. Like I hate the song Disturbia by Rihanna but the music video is awesome! You had every right to post this and I’m glad you did 🙂 !!

  • Milk

She just exhausts me now. I don’t see the horror aspects in the video. I came to the conclusion awhile ago that this website covers specific music genres so it doesn’t bother me. I usually just skip over anything music related.

    • JonathanBarkan

You’re breaking my heart here!!! I’m gonna go eat a box of oreos while sitting in a cold shower and weeping endlessly. I may even write some terrible poetry. Now where did I put my quill and inkpot…

    • RubenHilton93

I agree with everything you said. My thing is just I love this site I love horror and then I come on and Gaga is here too. I’m just like dam can’t a just get a break?

  • rickdunn101

Lady Gaga is no more a rip-off artist than any of the metal bands featured on this site. One persons “rip-off” is another’s “homage.” She’s bizarrely full of herself and not particularly humble anymore, but to be fair I saw her perform about four years ago as part of radio station-sponsored X-Mas party and she performed a short acoustic set – playing piano and singing better than any one of the pop chicks out right now. Too bad she’s committed to the same club banger sound on everything she does, except for that weird rock ballad (“You and I”) with the weird creatures in a barn music video. She sang the sh*t out of that but that Born This Way song..god awful.

  • Ocean1984

RubenHilton93 is a bitchy cunt. Read a different article. The video was defiantly interesting, the director obviously loves the dark side.

    • RubenHilton93

      Thank you 🙂

  • jack

It’s kinda sad to see so many people declaring love for the work of a performer such as gaga on a horror site. Even though they are just a pathetic vocal minority of sheep with poor taste, I didn’t think so many basic bitches visited this site. Nor did I realize BD was interested in catering to them with such a run-of-the-mill article that could’ve been found on any basic (terrible) entertainment/music/MTV/E! bullshit site out there.

When are you gonna write an article about the horrors of Miley Cyrus’s VMA performance Jonathan? You’ve clearly got an audience for your phoned-in, lazy, irrelevant “diversity”. Maybe you should write for something more your style… like hahaha. gag. Keep “doing your best”, you’ve got a quota to fill gurl! Get werking!
