In case you didn’t notice, the trailer for the RoboCop reboot hit yesterday. While the jury is still out on the film itself, the trailer contains none of the satire or edge that compels me to love Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 original so dearly. But what did it tell us? What’s different?
“In RoboCop, the year is 2029 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the centre of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front. Alex Murphy is a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp utilises their remarkable science of robotics to save Alex’s life. He returns to the streets of his beloved city with amazing new abilities, but with issues a regular man has never had to face before.“
RoboCop hits on February 7th, 2014. Head below for 5 Things We Learned From The RoboCop Trailer!!
That’s a pretty huge difference. Instead of slowly discovering his past, it seems like Murphy just kind of wakes up in a robot suit. His wife knows, his kid knows (they have “a talk” it looks like). Sure, he’s still fighting for control of his soul, but it looks like he has a huge leg up here.
I literally had no idea. I love Baruchel so I’m definitely hoping this one frame I could grab from the trailer isn’t his only appearance. Remember when Kal Penn was in Superman Returns for no reason? I hope that’s not the case here.
… I can’t say no to more Michael Keaton. Although I’d like to pretend this is his captain character from The Other Guys and that acting in RoboCop is his third job after working at Bed, Bath and Beyond.
