All Things ‘Friday the 13th’: Sequel for 2015, TV Series, ‘FvJ 2,’ and A Video Game?

Friday-the-13th-Part-4-The-Final-Chapter-FRIDAY-THE-13th-FINAL-CHAPTER-4

In lieu of the new Friday the 13th box set release, Scott Neumyer caught up with Friday the 13th creator/director Sean Cunningham to talk all things Voorhees.

While there’s not a whole lot of new information, he reiterates a few nuggets about the franchise’s next installment, and urges fans to support both the F13 and A Nightmare on Elm Street franchises if they ever want to see Jason bout with Freddy again.

There will be another Friday the 13th, which will probably get shot in the spring,” he tells Fearnet, reiterating the previously announced news of a sequel landing at Paramount Pictures. “If it all goes as I would like, it would then be released at the beginning of 2015.

While both of the Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street remakes performed well at the box office, the massive budgets mixed with huge weekend drop-offs have made it difficult for the studios to back sequels. While New Line/Warner Bros. is being a bit more trepidatious, Paramount is fast-tracking the F13 sequel. Point is, the odds of a Freddy vs. Jason sequel are being exponentially slim, unless of course fans start once again supporting these beloved horror icons.

I think the chances are good,” he says for an eventual Freddy vs. Jason sequel, “for a couple of reasons, but I think it will ultimately be a marketing concept. Right now, I think the audience would have to start getting bored with the Friday… movie by itself or the Freddy movie by itself. I don’t think it’s going to happen in the next short period of time.” So when? “Conceivably in five years.” That’s like closing your eyes and throwing a dart at a dartboard.

The other reason that I think it’s a possibility is that we spent so much effort in trying to find a way to get the two of them together in a movie that was action-packed and unpredictable that we had lots of material that was unused,” he continues speaking on the several versions of the script and multiple endings planned. “ It becomes possible to use it, or at least basic ideas or structural ideas that are already in place. We don’t have to start from scratch.

Lastly, he talks about “Friday the 13th: Crystal Lake Chronicles”, a new series that’s being developed for television. “[I] think there will also be “Friday the 13th: Crystal Lake Chronicles,” which is sort of a “Smallville”,” he reveals. “We’ve been on-again off-again with that for years and there are a bunch of great stories to be told, but I think the way that it’s finally going to get delivered is not through a conventional television network, but through the Internet.” He continues speaking on potential release models: “I can’t tell you who the delivery people will be, but it won’t be the traditional route. There’s also the possibility of webisodes,” he explains before tossing out this juicy nugget: “…and I think we even have an idea for a terrific Friday the 13th video game.

Could 2015 be the rebirth of Jason Voorhees? For horror’s sake, let us pray…

I would give anything for a serious Friday the 13th video game. We need a good survival horror with Jason at camp. Could be excellent.

    • Simon

  • DarrelDreadful

Give me the sequel and a true video game, life will be good.

  • Joe-Banger

Well good news I suppose, Im really looking forward to the video if it ever happens! @divisionbell, you said it right! Survival horror would be the right way to go for a Friday the 13th game! Lets hope Freddy gets a new game as well as Jason!

a fresh new story sounds good to me. at this point i’m wondering if brad fuller and platinum dunes know that!

  • lilmarkuk

This guy is a lying troll

im sorry there is no way on earth they could have a freddy vs Jason 2 now, because both series have been rebooted, you could get away with the Jason side of it because hes the same stupid character but its a totally different freddy and a different guy playing him so you could never have a sequel

it would have to be a fresh start ignoring the first freddy vs Jason which I don’t want at all.

englund would need to come back as freddy if they were to do a sequel and that wont happen now I don’t think.

He is just saying there could be a 2nd fvj just to get people to watch the new versions so they make money

    that’s IT

yeah, the “…and urges fans to support both the F13 and A Nightmare on Elm Street franchises if they ever want to see Jason bout with Freddy again”…is strange and i don’t agree w/ it. i am a fan of the F13 (1-5 and the reboot) movies and i’m very excited for the upcoming sequel. that being said i hated FREDDY VS. JASON and (no offense the FvJ fans) my supporting the F13 sequel shouldn’t automatically mean (and it doesn’t!) that i want or would go see FvJ part 2.

    and as

(sorry i pressed “post comment” by accident)

and lilmarkuk summed up perfectly why a FvJ sequel most likely wouldn’t happen.

I would love to see what they do with the television series; Since its going with a “smallville” type theme, I think they should focus on the surrounding towns by the camp. Show how all the murders have affected them, and watch as random people and certain “important” characters start getting picked off by jason, etc. As for a video game, if they take it in a serious direction I think it could be great. Maybe have Shinji Mikami as a director for the game; and give it a couple moments where if you dont have a weapon and jason shows up, have a kind of running scene like silent hill has done with shattered memories and downpour.

  • Voorhees83

I read over a different interview where Sean Cunningham said the new F-13th movie will not be a sequel to the remake. This has my hopes up. I’m hoping it’s a prequel to the original series or has something to do with the original series.

  • Marty McFly

Please, please make another Friday the 13th movie. I liked the reboot, sure the Jason holding Whitney hostage thing was kind of weird, but other than that it was fucking awesome. Long live Jason Voorhees.

  • Francesco

i’m wondering…why waiting 1 year before to shot another friday???? i think this guy is a bullshit

  • unisonruss

I’m all for more Jason…mostly due to childhood nostalgia. But let’s be honest, there hasn’t been a good entry since part VI…and the only reason that one is a good watch for me is because it’s actually fun, without being too cheesy. It has a tongue-in-cheek quality that’s hard to resist. The filmmakers need to remember what made this series great: really fun characters encountering a bad mother, dying in ways that would shock you. The remake lacked the fun and spirit of the franchise. It’s a problem when the opening 15 minutes have the best characters, tension, humor, and kills…and then it slowly fades to mind-numbing cliched bullshart.

REALLY interested in Jason on television, on the right network, of course.

  • VictorCrowley

100% behind a video game. Long, long overdue.

  • unisonruss

I would buy the bluray set in a heartbeat of they restored the Uncut versions of V, VI, VII, and VIII. How hard could it be? Plus they left out the Unrated of JGTH! I don’t care what you guys say, that’s a fun movie!

  • SuperKilla

Part 2 also has a reputation for having a really good death scene that was cut with the couple having sex on the bed. I’ve wanted to see this scene for so long now especially because everyone involved with the scene seems so excited every time they talk about it. And I agree that all the other films should be released uncut. I will not ever buy another Friday box set unless this mistake is fixed. I didn’t buy the blu ray set either.
