Despite a soft box office take in the US, there was speculation earlier this summer that we might be getting a Pacific Rim sequel due to the film’s international success (it did quite well in China, among other territories). Money is money no matter where it comes from, so with a worldwide take of $400 Million – I suppose it’s a possibility.
In fact director Guillermo del Toro says he’s already writing Pacific Rim 2 with original scribe Travis Beacham. He tells Empire Magazine, “We are writing the sequel. Travis Beacham and I are writing, so that is active. The decision to green light or not, that’s definitely above my pay rate.”
While that’s good news, pay particular attention to that comment about the green light. With a budget of around $200 million and global P&A expenses probably nearing half that, the original probably hasn’t made its money back yet (remember, that $400M figure is gross not net).
So if you really want Pacific Rim 2 – be sure to pick up the Blu-ray for Pac-Rim this week (it came out yesterday). Or buy it on VOD. They’re gonna need those ancillaries to push them over the top.
