Is Universal Creating An ‘Avengers’ Out Of Their Monsters?

The last we heard (at least around these horror parts) from producers Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman (who also wrote Transformers, Star Trek Into Darkness and Cowboys And Aliens) was that they were busy making their upcoming Van Helsing reboot as serious as possible.

Now, per IGN word comes down that they could be doing something very Marvel-like with the Universal monster universe. Orci tells the site, “Universal [has] this amazing library of their old monsters and these kinds of heroes, and the idea of trying to create a universe. ‘Van Helsing’, and we’re also producing ‘The Mummy’ for them. We’re kind of imagining updating these kinds of things. You don’t want to just make remakes when you’re doing a thing, unless it’s worthy of being a remake, but when you have an idea for something that can actually be made different and yet be true to what it was.

This is vague, but there’s some promising stuff in this implication. And since Orci is a fan of conspiracies, I don’t think he’d mind me hinting at one here with very little evidence. If a seamless Universal Monster universe existed, that would certainly be something. It would be nice to see a lot of these guys in a movie together for the first time since The Monster Squad. I’m not a huge fan of K&O’s output, but if this gets stitched together it could be cool either way.

    WOW! What non news.

  • Eh, trust me, as a horror fan I would LOVE it if they did a monsters style Avengers movie with Frankenstein, The Mummy, Bride Of Frankenstein, Dracula, etc. all on the same team. But with the exception of die hard horror fans, I can’t picture too many people being excited for this. And we all know the main goal of Hollywood is to make as much money as possible, so unless they REALLY put a lot of effort into this, I can’t see it working out.

Look at how Marvel built up The Avengers for YEARS with solo films for Iron Man, captain America, Hulk, and Thor, dropping little clues and hints for The Avengers along the way. They’re preparing to do the same thing for the Justice League with that Batman/Superman movie. And they’ll have to do the same thing with individual Dracula films, Mummy films, etc.

The Marvel films received positive feedback for the most part from fans and critics, but we all know main stream horror films are shit on 95% of the time. Bottom line, this monsters version of The Avengers won’t work if they don’t have any momentum to build on.

I would love to see them attempt this then just spit out another bad van helsing movie. The one good thing that came from van helsing is that it got universal to put out the classics on Dvd.

with mention of The Monster Squad, i’d actually like to see them kick it off with Van Helsing. Have that movie set the tone and then sequel or prequel the individual monster movies to give them their own stories or origins then end the set with a Monster Squad remake, which was in development but duno whats happened to it. Just a thought, i actually love the monster squad but id like to see them all connected.
is Tom Cruise still attached to Van Helsing?
