Both Microsoft and Sony have confirmed their next-gen consoles will support 8-player party chat. The Xbox One’s chat system will be powered by Skype, which Microsoft claims will substantially improve the sound quality and reliability — two improvements the Xbox 360 could benefit from — though it’s a little surprising they aren’t increasing that number over what the Xbox 360 already provides. With games like Battlefield 4, which have multiplayer modes that support dozens of people, I suspect some players wouldn’t mind 10+ player party chat.
As for the PlayStation 4, the eight-player support is something the PS3 does not provide, so it’s a definite improvement. On top of that new feature, Sony has already confirmed that players using a PS4 will be able to chat with Vita users.
