Fumito Ueda, the mind behind Ico and Shadow of the Colossus — two of the PlayStation 2’s greatest video games — and more recently the (still very much) delayed PlayStation 3 exclusive, The Last Guardian, recently sat down with UK gaming mag Edge to chat about his decision to leave Sony as well as what he’s planning on doing next. While Ueda wouldn’t shed light on his next project, he did have something intriguing to say about what he’d like to do in the future. The answer? Zombies.
“This may be surprising, but one day I’d like to make a game on the theme of zombies. I’d like to try making a low-threshold game for hardware that is based around a touchpad. That’s if I can come up with a well-suited idea, of course. There are many other things, too, but they’re secret.” More after the jump.
He didn’t stop there. Apparently, the folks at Edge were thinking exactly what I was when they asked Ueda what’s left to do? It seems like the popular subgenre sees a new entry every week.
“With a zombie motif, in terms of AI and motion technology and the operability of the player character, there are many elements that interest me and that are suited to in-game expression. Especially if there is a way to use [zombies] not just as a convenient enemy for the player to shoot at, but in a way that allows me to express a character in a lyrical way. There are always possibilities.”
I’m not sure what he means by that, but I’m all for a zombie game crafted by the guy behind Shadow of the Colossus.
