Hear ‘RoboCop’s’ Awesome Robot Voice In This First Clip!

Sony’s shared the first ever clip from RoboCop, their forthcoming reboot starring Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, Abbie Cornish, Jackie Earle Haley, Michael Kenneth Williams, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Michael Keaton, and Aimee Garcia.

The clip entitled “field test” takes Alex Murphy, as RoboCop, into a simulated battle against a bunch of robots – and Jackie Earle Haley. You get to hear RoboCop speak for the first time, and it’s glorious. Too bad the scene is gutted and destroyed with playful music that turns what could have been a cool training montage into a laughable joke. BARF.

In theaters February 12, 2014, “the year is 2029 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the centre of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front. Alex Murphy is a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp utilises their remarkable science of robotics to save Alex’s life. He returns to the streets of his beloved city with amazing new abilities, but with issues a regular man has never had to face before.

…that looks bad. Robocops gone teeny bopper.

I’m open to the remake and yes this is only a minute worth of footage but the tone here seems just wrong to me.

I saw the trailer before Anchorman 2 the other day and there was this like awkward ripple of half-giggles when ‘Robocop’ came up, like people weren’t sure if it was supposed to be a practical joke or not. It looks awful and interchangeable with all these other glossy, formulaic ‘updates’. I don’t see a trace of the satire, humour or ultra-violence which made the original so beloved. I’ll watch it once it hits DVD/Blu, but I don’t think I’ll ever buy it, even for a dollar…
