‘Berserk’ Gets Oliver Stone, Refn, and Gans?!

berserk

Jonny B. just pointed me to an eyebrow-raising new title in pre-production for a 2017 release.

Entitled Berserk, the horror/action/adventure is an adaptation of the popular Manga series written and illustrated by Kentaro Miura.

According to IMDB (who can never be trusted – thus, this is unconfirmed), the feature film adaptation will include this massive list of directors: Christophe Gans (Silent Hill, Brotherhood of the Wolf ), Oliver Stone (JFK, Platoon, Natural Born Killers) and Nicolas Winding Refn (Only God Forgives, Drive, Bronson)!

In the adaptation, “The Epic of Guts, a dangerous barbarian who joins forces with a mercenary group named ‘The Band of the Hawk’, lead by the charismatic Griffith, and fights with them as they battle their way into the royal court and their final doom.

Stuart Beattie (I, Frankenstein, 30 Days of Night, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl) worked on the screenplay.

Expect casting news shortly.

    its about damn time someone mention berserk on this site. Christophe Gans will be a good choice.but my dream one is guillermo del toro. berserk is the greatest adult fantasy graphic novel.

      You deserve a medal for mentioning GdT, or at least a thumbs up. That would seriously be a match made in heaven. Gans would be stylish and pretty, but only GdT would make this film a must-see.

        Ooh and given Guillermo Del Toro’s penchant for bringing monsters to the big screen, I know his version of Nosferatu Zodd would be beastly since Zodd appearance kinda already resembles some of GDT’s previous beasts.

        Oh god, I get all hot and bothered just thinking of an on-screen version of the Skull Knight. That would be so deliciously wicked.

    Don’t know whether to be excited by this “maybe” news… After reading the manga, seeing the Berserk anime series and now having seen The Golden AGe arc films…. I just don’t know if it’d be worth revisiting Griffiths descent yet again. I agree its the best fantasy graphic novel. It’s storytelling is unmatched in my opinion, but I kinda would like to see the story go past ‘The Golden Arc’ on screen. Getting a bit repetitive.

    @Amol
    I couldn’t agree with you more. GDT is the ONLY director that can do this manga adaptation justice, especially since they snub him the Hobbit

    I have recently been watching the OVA’s and they are osme of the most beautifully animated movies I have ever seen. Just do the OVA’s in live action and I would be happy.

    Odd enough, I wouldn’t mind Oliver Stone taking a crack at it. He was one of the writers of Conan the Barbarian. Dude might be known for his ultra political/social commentary stuff, but I think he might just have the right stuff for the “dark fantasy” genre.

    I really hope they don’t do a shit job on this. Berserk has been one of my favorite mangas for years now. If they can deliver on the gore and extremely dark fantasy aspects that the series is infamous for then it’ll be awesome.

    I KNOW THIS IS A FAR STRETCHED BUT DON’T FORGET SUSUMU HIRASAWA. guillermo AND SUSUMU TOGETHER, THE WORLD WILL NEED SOME NEW ‘FORCES’.

    I am TRULY hoping this film won’t be as bad as say the horrible “Fist of the North Star” Live action film. Oliver Stone is going to be one of the directors, so; there is some ray of light.
