Machete Kills, the sequel to the hugely successful original film from cult director Robert Rodriguez. Machete Kills arrives on home video today in a Combo Pack including Blu-ray, DVD,& Digital HD from Universal Studios Home Entertainment.
In the film, “Danny Trejo (Grindhouse, Machete) returns as legendary ex-Federale Machete Cortez in this action- packed thrill ride from innovative director Robert Rodriguez. In his latest mission, Machete is recruited by the U.S. President (Charlie Sheen/Carlos Estevez; Anger Management, Two and a Half Men) to stop a crazed global terrorist (Mel Gibson; Braveheart, Edge of Darkness) from starting a nuclear war. With a bounty on his head, Machete breaks all the rules as he faces death at every turn from an all-star cast of deadly assassins.”
I imagine it didn’t take a lot of arm wrangling to get you back for Machete Kills?
All he had to say was “Amber Heard.”
It has such a giant cast, how does it feel to be the focal point of all that?
I think everybody in Hollywood just wants to work with Robert. He’s an easy director lets you do what you want to do. We got Lady Gaga. Charlie Sheen. We got Amber Heard. We got Amber Heard! We got Amber Heard! We also got Demian Bichir who was great to work with, he’s on a show right now called “The Bridge.”
It seems like you have the most interaction with Mel Gibson.
He’s the nicest guy in the world. I had a sword fight with him and when Robert Rodriguez yelled “action!” I threw my sword down! Everyone looked at me and Robert said, “what the hell’s wrong with you Danny?” I told him, “I’m not fighting William Wallace! Are you crazy?!” Mel just fell out. That was his character in Braveheart. We had a blast. Mel is one of those guys who knows enough about everything. In 1962 the cops broke my shoulder, it’s always had this little thing in it and nobody knew about it right? And it’s funny because Mel looks at me and says, “how long has your shoulder been bothering you?” And then he jabs me, almost punching me. But then I could raise my left hand, which I could never raise higher. Then he started talking about certain herbs, all of these herbs and all this healthy sh*t.
You’ve got a trailer for Machete Kills… in Space in the film. What’s the status of that?
Oh yeah. We’re talking about it. We trade ideas all the time.
You make a lot of films. Do you ever feel overextended or is this just the pace you’re comfortable with?
I am so blessed. I love what I do, I really do. I just got back yesterday from Miami and I was just doing a photo shoot with Bruce Weber, who is really top dog as far as photographers go, right? And he’s got this gorgeous model there. And the first thing he says is “put your arms around her and we’ll take a picture.” You’ll never get tired of that.
