Billboard has posted some tragic news, reporting that Century Media Records co-owner Oliver Withöft has passed away. He was 49. Withöft came aboard Century Media Records a year and a half after Robert Kampf founded the company in 1988. Withöft had apparently been absent from his managerial duties for some time after taking ill.
Several professionals have made statements regarding this loss. Sumerian Records publicist George Vallee states, “Oliver was one of the kindest and most generous people I have ever met in the industry. He gave me my first label job at Century Media in 2001 and I am proud to have been his friend. I will never forget him.” Ex-Roadrunner Records A&R guru Monte Connor has called this passing, “…a real tragedy.”
In a personal note, it was Century Media Records that first answered my emails way back when I started working for Bloody-Disgusting, back in late 2009. I was talking directly with Vallee, who worked there at that time. Because of the open communication and excitement that Century Media Records had, I will always have a place in my heart for them, both professionally and personally. My heart goes out to everyone at Century Media Records and to Withöft’s surviving family, his wife, Judith, and their three daughters. Rest in peace, Oliver. You will be sorely missed.
