I don’t really like Pitch Black or Chronicles of Riddick, but I’ll be damned if David Twohy’s Riddick wasn’t a giant bowl of kickass.
And even though it sort of quietly hit theaters, and looked like a guaranteed flop, it actually performed quite well (nearly $100m worldwide). Maybe it was because Vin Diesel starred, or maybe word of mouth was actually pretty positive (why wouldn’t it be, the movie was badass).
Being that Universal left Diesel and Twohy alone to make their R-rated picture, I’m beyond stoked that Uni is talking sequel.
“I’m just excited, and happy, and I’m shouting out to you guys to say thank you,” Diesel tells fans on Facebook. “Universal just called me and told me that Riddick is number one on the DVD charts. There’s no way in the world Riddick would have been made without you guys, you know that. You guys have been a part of our page since 2012 and remember how arduous a road it was to get the movie made, and to make it rated R, and to do it with such a low budget. It’s a win for all of us and I really, really, really, really thank you so much.”
He adds: “Yeah, I’m excited, and of course, Universal’s also saying they want to develop the next one.”
I pray Universal understands that the film was great because they kept their grubby mitts off the pic and doesn’t get greedy with the fourth film.
Did you see Riddick yet? Thoughts? (And don’t say you hate it because you’re mad Batista won the Royal Rumble.)
