‘Sea Of Nooses’ Is Set In Japan’s Infamous Suicide Forest

Aokigahara

If you’re unfamiliar with the Aokigahara Forest that sits at the base of Mount Fuji in Japan, it’s probably for the best. The forest is eerily quiet, thanks to the density of its trees and an absence of wildlife. This quiet forest is where hundreds of people have visited to die since as early as the 1800′s. It’s reportedly the most popular place for suicides in all of Japan, with an average of 100 people claiming their lives there every year.

It’s so creepy, I listed it as a potential setting for a horror game a few years back. Now, one indie developer is taking advantage of its unnerving history with their first game, Sea of Nooses.

Sea of Nooses is a Unity3D Horror game inspired by the infamous Aokigahara forest located in Japan. The game will use mechanics similar to Slender: The Arrival’s Scrapbook, You’ll be able to Listen to audio tapes and view tapes collected off of dead bodies or Broken Camcorders

Watch through the life of Seicho Rye, a former police officer. In October of 2001, His sister went missing in the forest Aokigahara, An investigation revealed nothing at all and they later said that it must’ve been a suicide. Rye wanted to go back and investigate but his job got in the way. Months down the line he retired, He wanted to go back to the forest and document what he would find… he just wanted to find any evidence that his sister was either alive or dead.

In 2003 He finally set out to Aokigahara forest, he spent hours during the day and found nothing… till he got lost and night finally fell. The nooses on the trees began to fall and the eye’s began to pierce through the branches… a distant gunshot breaks the silence.

According to it’s developer, Sea of Nooses is not another Slender clone. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing this in action. Bring on a trailer!

This sounds like a great concept. I hope that they have something like the sanity meter, and when it reaches it’s limit the character kills themself- like no one actually kills you except yourself. Bonus points if they switch up the suicides and make it creative.

Aokigahara forest is super creepy and I love it as a location for things. Very dark and inspiring. Have you read “The Suicide Forest” graphic novel by El Torres? It’s pretty good. Anyway, this game could be pretty neat. I’m glad someone’s at least trying out the idea of this setting.

That being said, I think “Sea of Nooses” isn’t a great title… I don’t think I’ve ever heard ‘noose’ pluralized; it just sounds kind of silly, like ‘gooses’ or ‘noses’, but hey, that’s just me, and I can’t think of a better title off the bat.

I will definitely check that graphic novel out!

I completely agree. I actually prefer the game’s original title, The Silent Sea. It sounds creepier, and less awkward, than Sea of Nooses, IMO.

“The Silent Sea” is *miles* better! I’d even forgive the lack of actual sea in the game, hah. Oh well, hopefully the game is good enough to look past the title, but it’s certainly not helping. Very awkward.
