[TV] Meet the New “Constantine”!

NBC’s DC Comics adaptation “Constantine” has found its leading man as THR writes that “Criminal Minds” alum Matt Ryan is near a deal to star in the drama based on the “Hellblazer” graphic novels.

‘Constantine’ centers on master of the occult John Constantine, who struggles with his faith as he is haunted by the sins of his past and is suddenly thrust into the role of defending humanity from the gathering forces of darkness.

John is described as a working-class Londoner with deadpan humor who is a mysterious conman and occult detective
haunted by the recent loss of a young girl’s soul. No stranger to the dark underworld that exists parallel to our own, Constantine has been studying the dark arts since he was a teenager. He’s taught himself spells, rituals, curses and conjuring, but the one person he most wishes to see — his mother, who died giving birth to him — remains out of reach, at least so far. When Liv, the daughter of a late friend, is targeted by demons, Constantine steps in to save her and the two form an alliance.

“Dexter’s” Daniel Cerone will pen the script with Batman Begins‘ David Goyer attached to executive produce. Neill Marshall (“Game of Thrones”, Dog Soldiers, Doomsday) will direct the pilot for the Warner Bros. Television drama.

    Right name, wrong picture.

And yaaay they hired a Brit to play a Brit.

Bleach him blonde, forget Keanu, and stick close to the comics and they will have a hit.

    • weresmurf

Sticking exactly close to the comics doesn’t always guarantee a hit. However, sticking to the *spirit* of the comics will definitely play in its favour. Look at ARROW for instance, which eschews a lot of the Green Arrow comics, but keeps completely in spirit of the comics, thus making it a hit and a quality product. Even if they don’t stay in line with the comics, but keep the spirit of Hellblazer, the core mechanics and dump EVERYTHING about that horrible Keanu movie, we could be in for a treat indeed.

Also, so glad a tv show is what we’re getting, we need tv to develop John Constantine properly, a single movie or two just isn’t long enough to do it. Personally, that all being said, I hope they do his lung cancer arc with the three Lords of Hell for the first or second season, by god that was a piece of genius that storyline 😀

Been a fan of the comic and movie (it grew on me) for awhile now. But NBC has me questioning if they’ll get his character right, just because, well it’s NBC. And I’m with you weresmurf, the whole lung cancer story would be sick to see and great way to start out an overlooked masterpiece.

I see it as the only genuine way to start John Constantine to be honest?

I mean, have him invariably dying for the first one or two seasons, he CANNOT escape death, it is coming for him wether he likes it or not, he knows this for sure and he’s preparing for it. Then, when all seems lost and it’s about to happen, you know what happens and the story plays out 😉

Looking forward to seeing what they do with it.

Whilst he may have moved to London, Constantine is in fact Liverpudlian if memory serves me right.

  • Seal_Clubber

    He looks like Alan Wake.
