Heavy metal band Metallica will be popping open some champagne bottles in the near future as their 1991 self-titled album (which is widely referred to as the Black Album) is expected pass 16 million copies sold in the next few months. The album averages sales between 2,000 to 3,000 per week.
The album has already been certified as 16 times platinum for shipping over 16 million copies and is, according to Nielsen SoundScan, the best-selling CD of the SoundScan era.
I defended this album pretty strongly in my article, “Metallica And The Case Of The Entitled Fans”, which you can read here. I mean, considering that it was the album that got me into metal, it’s always going to have a special place in my heart!
