[TV] “True Detective” Season 2: Strong Women and the Occult!

I finally got to sit down and enjoy the finale of HBO’s inaugural season of “True Detective”, which started off like a classic genre film and ending with a burst of terror. While this season wasn’t horror per se, it definitely touched upon something larger. Taking cues from “American Horror Story”, the show is an anthology telling a new story with fresh characters each season, thus leaving us all asking “what’s next?”

During an interview with series creator Nic Pizzolatto, HitFix inquired about the direction next season will take.

I realize I need to keep being strange. Don’t play the next one straight,” Pizzolatto said. “This is really early, but I’ll tell you [it's about] hard women, bad men, and the secret occult history of the United States transportation system.

Pizzolatto also went on to say that his prose is typically “populated with rich female characters,” so hopefully we will see female detectives who will act as “mirrors to reflect some aspect of Rust (McConaughey) or Marty (Harrelson)”. I’d love to see a series from the perspective of two strong female leads, you?

I wish HBO wasn’t so behind on a second season, now being scripted, as I am dying for them to get filming underway. What is so great about “True Detective” is that it’s slow-burn television, something unique to the modern era that’s littered with flash cuts and quick-snapping dialogue like in “Scandal.” “Detective” is solid crime novel storytelling. Check it.

I hope they stick to an 8 episode arc. This season was perfect, in length. Any longer, and it would’ve just dragged, which is partially why the slow-burn “crime-novel storytelling” works well as the narrative.
