Jim Mickle is becoming a genre icon, having directed Mulberry Street, Stake Land and We Are What We Are.

His latest offering premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this past January, and was quickly snatched up by IFC Films.

We now have a batch of stills from Cold In July, the Mickle-directed drama that stars “Dexter’s” Michael C. Hall, Sam Shepard, Don Johnson and Vinessa Shaw. It will be opening on VOD and in limited theaters on May 23.

How can a split-second decision change your life? While investigating noises in his house one balmy Texas night in 1989, Richard Dane (Michael C. Hall) puts a bullet in the brain of low-life burglar Freddy Russell (Wyatt Russell). Although he’s hailed as a small-town hero, Dane soon finds himself fearing for his family’s safety when Freddy’s ex-con father, Ben (Sam Shepard), rolls into town, hell-bent on revenge.

No mention that it’s based on a book by the great Joe Lansdale? Not my favorite book of his, but he is one of the most excellent authors going today.

Why do you keep writing headlines that say “Dexter” instead of “Michael C Hall”? It doesn’t make any sense. Dexter is done, let the poor guy move on.
