I’m only going to say this once, treat yourself this weekend and go indulge on Jim Jarmusch’s hipster horror Only Lovers Left Alive, starring Tilda Swinton, Tom Hiddleston and Mia Wasikowska.
As I stated before, don’t expect a blood bath; what you’ll see is more of a moody vampire film that some people joke should be the last vampire movie ever made. They’re right. I think Only Lovers Left Alive brings it all around and it’s all been done to death. It’s time for a breather.
I’m a massive fan of the film, but it may not be for everyone. In fact, Ryan Daley liked, but didn’t love it. Evan Dickson was more on my side of the fence. Check out the following clip to get a taste (pun intended) of the film’s mood.
What’s it about? “Set against the romantic desolation of Detroit and Tangier, an underground musician, deeply depressed by the direction of human activities, reunites with his resilient and enigmatic lover. Their love story has already endured several centuries at least, but their debauched idyll is soon disrupted by her wild and uncontrollable younger sister. Can these wise but fragile outsiders continue to survive as the modern world collapses around them?”
