Kevin Smith Gets More Horrific With ‘Anti-Claus’

Anti_Claus

Looks like Kevin Smith is staying in horror-ville with Anti-Claus. He just wrapped up Tusk and is grafting the stars from that film – Justin Long, Haley Joel Osment, Genesis Rodriguez and Michael Parks – onto this one.

It’s not about Santa Claus, though. It’s about Krampus. Here’s Smith talking about it, “When I was a kid, if they wanted to make a Christmas horror movie, they’d stick an axe in Santa’s hands. In Anti-Claus we leave Santa alone and creep with the Krampus through twisted tales of holly-jolly murder, desire, desperation and despair. Just in time for the holiday season. In America, we’re taught that nice kids gets presents from Santa and naughty kids get coal. But in countries like Germany, Austria, Bavaria, Romania and Hungary, Christmas is more metal than merry: Saint Nicholas brings a sack full of toys for good kids and the Krampus carries an empty bag for taking away the bad kids. I wanna see THAT Christmas movie. So rather than wait for it, we’ll make it instead.

Robert Kurtzman (Cabin Fever, Late Phases) will create the Krampus. XYZ Films has picked up all international sales rights to the film, which shoots in September.

My friends just had a discussion about Krampus this past weekend hehe and now this! This is awesome!

    Seriously looking forward to this!

This is a great idea. I’m really shocked it hasn’t been made before. Even the crampus costumes you see in parades in Bavaria, etc. are awesomely frightening.

I hope “Tusk’ is good too. I do like Kevin Smith, and I anxiously await to find out if he’s good at horror or not.

Looks promising…. I liked “Red State” and for some reason everyone was hating on that film.

I like the idea, and it has proven to be a good one for holiday horror. Rare Exports is a holiday favorite in my household and deals with Krampus. I think the American Dad Christmas Special this year also dealt with Krampus. It’ll be a hard one to mess up, especially with Kurtzman creating the Krampus.

Krampus has officially jumped the shark. I would say Kevin Smith has too, but he probably can no longer jump (that’s right – FAT JOKE!).
At least I’ll always have Dogma (and Mallrats, and Clerks, and Jay and Silent Bob, and animated Clerks).

I can’t agree with you. The closest Krampus has come to jumping the shark is when it appeared on The Venture Bros. Whatever happened to that show, anyway? As for Smith, I’m a casual fan, so if his work has so drastically changed…. I haven’t noticed. I am, however, extremely excited for this Krampus movie to come to fruition.

Venture Bros. is still on, it just ran a new season a few months ago. All episodes are now available free on Adult Swim’s website.

Thanks. Gonna check that out, now!

I’m WAY excited for this flick. I keep up with Smith’s podcasts and he’s been talkin about it for a while now. What this article doesn’t talk about explicitly (and to me is the best part) is that it’s an anthology movie; 4 (I think) tales of terror involving the Krampus, with a framing-device between stories. Kind of a Christmas-”Creepshow”.
