‘Pacific Rim 2’ Currently Being Scripted!!

Move over Godzilla, the Jaegers are preparing for a second war.

Buzzfeed was luck enough to catch up with Guillermo del Toro, who is out promoting his new FX series “The Strain” at the Austin Television Festival.

Del Toro revealed to the site that he and screenwriter Zak Penn (X-Men: The Last Stand, The Incredible Hulk) have started work on a screenplay for Pacific Rim 2!

“I’m working very, very hard with Zak Penn. We’ve been working for a few months now in secret. We found a way to twist it around. Travis Beacham [co-writer of the first film, now working on Fox’s Hieroglyph] was involved in the storyline and now I’m writing with Zak because Travis has become a TV mogul.”

Del Toro also revealed that the script isn’t going to be a prequel, as rumored, and includes the characters Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) and Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi) — and the story will follow the events of the first movie.

“Some people were wondering if we were going to do the prequel. I was never interested in doing that first wave of invasion,” del Toro said. “I’m going for very new, very crazy ideas on the second one, which are very different from the first one — but you will get really great spectacle.”

While Pacific Rim – from Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures – didn’t look like a monster hit, it actually made more than $400M worldwide. It’s a hit and a sequel is warranted.

I have a funny feeling the robots will be going to the monsters universe this time around!we got a sneak peek at the end of the first film!

This is great news for me, I really didn’t think they would move on with the sequel but I’m so glad they are. The first one is badass and I can’t wait to see what they have in store for us in the sequel. Bigger monsters maybe?

Maybe this time their super secret ultimate last ditch weapon instead of crappy generic sword will be a slingshot made out of popsickle sticks or something. >_<

Sorry, can't get over how dumb that movie was… and on so many more levels than just that (and I like dumb movies!). Even the fights weren't that great (fighting in the ocean? snore! Need moar collateral damage.)

      Nice try.

I liked this movie. A lot. Don’t quite know why.
It certainly has stupid moments and characters, like the idiotic scientists who ruin its credibilty a bit. But the rest of the movie was quite good. And in terms of ultimate goal, it’s even better than Gojira, where a monster lizard comes to defeat other monsters and then… oh, I’m too tired, I’m going to sleep now. Wait? What about those tiny things that were right beside you and even tried to harm you with sticks and fireworks?
I’ll wait eagerly for this sequel.

  • Woohoo! I loved the first one – it was not fight overkill and surprisingly they spend developing somehow the characters. I loved the fight setting and some of the visuals as usual per Del Toro film were exquisite

    Awesome. I love Pacific Rim.

Will someone start cloning kaiju terrestrially from the remnants? Cyborg kaiju/jaeger hybrids? Will c-s-a78 at the bottom of the thread be correct?

    Can’t wait to find out!

AHHHH can’t wait! Hopefully Zak Penn can improve the script. I wonder if that Volron-inspired theory is true. I hope they bring back the old jaegers, improved and equipped with better weapons
