What Would You Like to See from ‘Doom 4′?

Doom4

Our patience finally paid off last week with the long-awaited reveal of Doom 4. The game was teased through a creepy CG trailer, sans any gameplay footage, but I’m sure that decision was made so we’d all tune into its full reveal at QuakeCon next month. AAA horror has lost much of its appeal lately, as a few of our favorite horror franchises — Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Dead Space — have all managed to disappoint with their latest installments.

So with that in mind, what would you like to see from Doom 4? What would make you excited to play it? Let’s chat about it in the comments below.

I’d like to see a creepy tone to this one, I mean you have to have epic guns and violence, but throw in a shit ton of jump scares. Like Dead Space 2, I guess.

    • Adam Dodd

I’m all for that. Doom, as a series, needs an identity. Doom 3 strived to be a pure horror game, but that didn’t quite mesh with its 90′s style action. I’d love to see them take it in a direction closer to psychological horror.

    • Joshua

We have to all remember, the new Doom is going to be based on Earth, not space. Its gonna be a little different with lack of “dead creepy space” – Actual space, not the game. I’m thinking destroyed metro stations, creepy factories, army bases. Teleportation ports that take you a ‘space station’ that is supposed to be “safe”.. But actually isn’t. Maybe even back to Mars for a couple of levels to get info on the demons. I don’t know. But there’s a hell of alot of potential for this game to be a full on, time consuming, horror jump, shooting fest of a game.. And for one, I’m dreadfully excited – That being said.. I’m not investing into Wolfenstein just for the D4 beta.. Not fallin’ for that marketing ploy

    • Paddy

I like the jumps and scares, but it’s almost more effective to have them scattered out. I don’t like it when a game starts off with overload jumps because I sort of adapt to expect them within a couple hours of playing. It can also hurt replay a bit in my opinion. With that said, there better be some jumps and scares to keep a solid edge throughout the entire game. It will be cool to be stocked throughout the game similar to how some of the older Resident Evil games were (walking and then the character stocking you through the game comes through a wall at you).

I’d like secrets! I remember spending crazy amounts of time in Doom 1 and 2 (and even more so the first two Quake’s) scouring every map for telltale signs of secret doors and rooms. Oh, and the gameplay has to bee kickass, obviously. I never finished Doom 3, it grew boring.

    • Adam Dodd

Now that I think about it, I don’t remember any hidden bits in Doom 3. I’d definitely like to see them bring that back, give us a reason to replay the game.

      • Anton Toporkov

They were there, but not really as secrets.
Sometimes it was a coded panel or a side button, sometimes a small computer screen that opened a vent etc.

There definately was secrets in D3,but they melded more with the overall game i think that they didnt FEEL like secrets in the end :/

    • Gregory Miller

I really missed the secrets in Doom 3. Good call and I hope they feel the same way.

    • Joshua

There were secrets… Maybe not as much, but its a little difficult to put as many secrets into a 3D world rather than 2D, when with 2D you can have simple, flat, secret doors Anywhere… You cant on newer games

      • diapers

Yeah, Doom I and II were 2D (I recall many calling it 2-and-a-half-D at the time), but Quake I and II were 3D and carried the secret rooms and stashes to an even greater extent that Doom… it was common for the Quake secrets to be achieved by jumping up/down to odd places.

I want to see callbacks to the original game music in the score of DOOM. I love jamming out to the original soundtracks even to this day, I would also very much enjoy for this to take place both on mars and then earth with a lot of hell, like the original campaigns. I guess basically what i’m saying is, DooM 3 tried to reboot the series and it did not do such a great job, I would like to see DOOM be a reboot of the original games following more closely to the original story, which was about a space marine forced to take a mission on mars because he disobeyed a senior officers command to fire on civilians. They could do so much with that story alone. I would also like to see a custom level creator with lighting options and the ability to upload these to a database of custom levels(No more of this darkness/flashlight business). There were so many things about the original game that can still hold up and even thrive today. Also, Evil Dead references, just as a callback to the original.

  • Rob

ATMOSPHERE. I want that creepy atmosphere they achieved in doom 3 and in games like dead space. I know the id tech 5 isn’t really great for dynamic lighting like how the dead space engine is but hopefully it gets modified for some creepy and truly dynamic lighting like lots of moving shadows and the whole bright white light that seems to show up in space movies and games in thin rays coming through the shutters and some haze or smoke to reflect off of. I don’t want all corridors but they definitely have their place in a doom game along with creepy monster encounters. I’m hoping they add a bit of gun leveling and modding along with maybe a little crafting if it’s done right. Mostly though please give us space/sci if/horror atmosphere done right where you feel secluded and alone, if they do that I can handle the rest.

  • Ahmed El Baz

    If it ain’t broken : Don’t fix it .
Similar to Doom 3 : I want Atmospheric build up . Suspense, Psychological warfare with shadows , Sound . Space indoors environment with creepy settings and shocks everywhere. Guns ! Big guns that splatters blood everywhere ! put a god damn saw blades thrower ! i wanna see a lot of teared limps and guts ! Basically Doom 3 in a bigger badder meaner way with even bigger monsters !

  • Houston Meza

It need to be satanic and hellish as fuck.Period.

    • Adam Dodd

Something along the lines of Dante’s Inferno’s Lucifer, now with 200% more demon shlong?

      • evilneck .

Dude if the boss and demons looks like a dam trees . I mean this is not Narnia or dead space what makes doom is fluency between levels
giving the player the feel of empowerment of devastating hords of demons and anything in your way. Being the the trend setter for fps
doom3 was before the dead space saga saying to be it is a reticulated faulty idea (through my mind).doom was first to have shadow environment first to have a distance multiplayer system. I just hope they get rid of those flying babies , and trites, bring back baron of hell ,arachnotron! and the spidermastermind!

      • Joshua

This has gotta be a joke.. Go watch that new film in the cinema -Maleficent and enjoy your strawberry flavored pop corn.

      • Gregory Miller

Oh *I* would like 200% more demon schlong! Especially if they’re Hades Red and barbed. One ticket please!

      • Paddy

I’d much rather Doom stick to flesh and bio mechanical type stuff lol.

      • SpaceManSpliffz .

Now that is a big penis

  • Gregg Silver

If the new Wolfenstein gives us any insight into how this game is going to be, I’m really excited for it more now then I was when doom 4 was announced

    • FLAW_88

The new Wolfenstein was not developed by ID software. It was developed by Machinegames. Therefore, the new DOOM (being developed by ID) will most likely not take anything from Wolfenstein the new order.

      • Gregg Silver

That bums me out. I had gotten my hopes up when I saw that buying the new Wolfenstein would get you into the beta for doom

  • Brodequin

Hellish, dark, brutal and bloody as hell!!!

    • Adam Dodd

Shut up and take my money! :)

  • TrishDoddseus

my buddy’s sister makes $87 every hour on the internet
. She has been unemployed for 6 months but last month her payment was $19402
just working on the internet for a few hours. go right here Moneyduties.COM

    • Brodequin

Shove it up you arse, bloody spammer!!!

      • RIB

I want DOOM 4 to have old school ‘Bull Demons’…. (possibly eating TrishDoddseus alive.)

        • Brodequin

Yep, with old chips and cheap piss white vine he he…

  • Un Gsund

dark and evil atmosphere, loads of shitloads :D, secrets and riddles,no self regeneration but medipacks and loads of demons…

    • Joshua

Self generation… What Doom 3 did you play lol

      • Un Gsund

i really like the whole doom universe but doom 3 wasnt my biggest love :D imo self regeneration destroys the survival feelin i loved an still love in games..

        • The La Li Lu Le Lo

There is no regenerative health in Doom 3, fool.

          • Un Gsund

didnt say that there is.. friend :D

          • Joshua

True, you didn’t say there was in Doom 3.. However, you did make it sound like that the way you wrote it on your previous comment lol. Our bad though!

  • sweetooth0

Bring back the old school. Doom 3 was fun for what it was, but frankly, it wasn’t DOOM. I want hordes of monsters, ultra splattering gore, and total satanic blasphemy. Take a page from the Brutal Doom mod and amp it up with a modern engine and I’ll be there!

    • Adam Dodd

Totally agree. They need to crank up the ‘WTF Did I Just See?’ Factor with Doom 4. I want to leave disgusted, disturbed, and entertained.

      • Brodequin

        Dismembered and disemboweled…Yes, yes, yes…

      • sonicboom

There are so many games that have those qualities nowadays though, that has become a rather boring thing. It’s no longer a culture-shock but it has become a norm in action games….

    • LoveAnimation

I want the game to focus on scary horror and a great scary and creepy atmosphere like Doom 3 did but hopefully even scarier.
And i want a scary and disturbing story.
The old Doom games are fun to play but like it way better if it focuses more on trying to be scary than focusing on the action.
The shooting in Doom 3 was fun of course but i liked that it focused more on the scary horror than blasting armies of monsters.

      • Paddy

I don’t see why they can’t do both. Add in the creepy atmosphere of Doom 3 with better graphics and sound while creating somewhat of maze type levels that were found in the original Doom games (or at least a little more so than Doom 3).

        • LoveAnimation

Dont know if that could work or not.
I want the place your exploring to feel like a real place that humans used to work in and live there lives before the demons invaded like the mars base in Doom 3.

    • sonicboom

It’s easy for people to be fooled with the idea that this could work but the fact is that with new hardware to take advantage of & the fact we are not in the early nineties makes it impossible for developers to do as you stated.

We have to be logical here, there must be a balance in both developer ease of production going smooth and consumer demand. They tried sticking to “classic formula and elements with the new 2014 Wolfenstein, look what happened. It was a complete mess. Did it stick to the classic PC style of shooters? Yes and even the classic story elements were there yet nobody was really satisfied and that was a mistake that Bethseda made.

With a new dawn of console generation, we need new formulas of gameplay and innovative ideas. I don’t want to turn Doom into a Call Of Duty or Mario. Last thing we need is repetitive in the horror genre lol

Doom 4 will be closer to Doom 3 then Doom and Doom 2 and I’m glad to see that but that’s my opinion.

      • sweetooth0

Why is it harder to develop a game more in line with the older Doom titles than it is to develop one more in line with Doom 3 may I ask?

I haven’t played the new Wolfenstein so I can’t comment on it, but from what I have heard it was pretty cool.

        • sonicboom

You’re right, and judging by Quakecon yesterday, you got your wish. The new Doom will be more like the classic Doom game! :)

  • recycle bin

Same scary stuff DEF, but not just another generic shoot em and kill COD type game PLEASE. Apply some interesting stuff, like perhaps quests Oblivion style woven in.. and ALOT of game time – a short game gets fans really peeved off! Mybe something like weapon upgrades.. but best of all, keep it close to the original and SIMPLE!

  • Joshua

We have to all remember, the new Doom is going to be based on Earth, not space. Its gonna be a little different with lack of “dead creepy space” – Actual space, not the game. • Adam Dodd

One of the most memorable levels in Dead Space 2 was when Isaac had to return to the USG Ishimura, where the original Dead Space took place.

I like the idea of returning to a familiar section of Doom 3′s Mars outpost, albeit briefly, in the next Doom. I wouldn’t mind seeing the level where Pinky scared the crap out of me. That could be very effective, if handled correctly.

  • James Allard

    1) A soundtrack. Something eerie, creepy and understated.
    2) Silence. Rather than massive amounts of noise, occasional moments of total silence.
    3) The rest of the original games. Doom 3 (at least for 360) had the first pair of games on it… maybe a clean up, or a couple o’ more bits in the mix.
    4) Last, I want it IN MY MACHINE. But I would rather wait for the best possible version. I will be here waiting.

  • Anton Toporkov

    I’d pay for everything D°°M 3 had:
the actual creepy atmosphere. The lights jumping, the pipes hissing, creepy shadows etc
-lack of soundtrack. The lack of an OST was a lot more immersing than having one. I wont be against having an option the play the game levels with the OST from the first 2 D°°Ms however. old style…
-decently smart enemies that use cover
-the “im a marine,i carry ALL my guns at once”. None of that COD crap where we can only choose 2 and a knife. NO.F’ING.WAY.

This with the RAGE engine (although repaired. The textures in RAGE and the late Wolfie are cry-worthy at how bad they were),better dynamic lighting (i always had problem with the fact my lamp didnt draw out the outline of a zombie or that the burning Zs didnt have a proper moving light source for walls etc).
Seeing as its on Earth, have it look like Metro 2034. Bleak, cold. We are losing the war. Having to adapt to it maybe but still keeping a more Painkiller-like style where we get simple clear logical reasons to go do an objective. Again,no COD stuff like “sneak up on this Imp while Lt. Hawke covers you from across the street with his sniper rifle” crap.

In short, even creepier and hellish D°°M 3. Oh and of course…NO ESCORT MISSIONS. And more subtle humor about miss-placed chainsaws.

    Clayman out.-

  • sonicboom

Awesome lighting effects and return of the Hell Knight.

Hoping Doom 4 will be good, I bought Wolfenstein, it was horrid so I sold it. Thankfully I got what I paid for it.

  • FLAW_88

Everyone needs to understand that Wolfenstein The New Order was NOT developed by ID Software or Bethesda. Bethesda was the publisher. Machinegames developed the new Wolfenstein. ID Software is developing the new DOOM (as always) with Bethesda as the publisher as well. Therefore, the new DOOM will most likely take nothing from the new Wolfenstein unfortunately.

  • Lucas Prilliman

Hopefully it’ll take place on earth…Hell On Earth.
