Alex Aja’s Head-Exploding News: ‘Scanners’ His Next Project? #SDCC

Published

Head all the way back to the 2011 San Diego Comic-Con where it was first announced that the Weinstein Co.’s Dimension Films was developing a TV show based on David Cronenberg’s 1981 cult classic Scanners with director Alexandre Aja serving as executive producer.

During the press conference for Horns, we got a quick update from Aja on where the show is at.

I’ve always been a huge huge fan of Cronenberg and especially Scanners,” Aja told us. “I think it’s one of the best worlds and best universes created. There’s been a few years where I’ve tried to figure out a way to create a TV show. Hopefully, next year here at the same place we’ll be revealing a lot, but yes, but this is definitely something I want to do next.

It’s gonna be so good your head’s gonna explode,” chimed in author Joe Hill (also on the Horns panel with Aja) with a laugh.

No matter what he says, I don’t think there’s any chance of this getting off the ground, although my head would explode if Aja were to pull it off.

The 1981 film begins when a scientist sends a man with extraordinary psychic powers to hunt others like him.

Filming is underway on The Invisible Man director Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man for Universal and Blumhouse, which will be howling its way into theaters on January 17, 2025.

Deadline reports that Matilda Firth (Disenchanted) is the latest actor to sign on, joining Christopher Abbott (Poor Things),  Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel), and Sam Jaeger.

The project will mark Whannell’s second monster movie and fourth directing collaboration with Blumhouse Productions (The Invisible Man, Upgrade, Insidious: Chapter 3).

Wolf Man stars Christopher Abbott as a man whose family is being terrorized by a lethal predator.

Writers include Whannell & Corbett Tuck as well as Lauren Schuker Blum & Rebecca Angelo.

Jason Blum is producing the film. Ryan Gosling, Ken Kao, Bea Sequeira, Mel Turner and Whannell are executive producers. Wolf Man is a Blumhouse and Motel Movies production.

In the wake of the failed Dark Universe, Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man has been the only real success story for the Universal Monsters brand, which has been struggling with recent box office flops including the comedic Renfield and period horror movie The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Giving him the keys to the castle once more seems like a wise idea, to say the least.
