Ew. Today is the 10 Year Anniversary of ‘The Village’

Published

Usually people celebrate anniversaries – especially as of late with the new “cool” being to point out our favorite films from years past.

But today’s a different kind of anniversary…it’s the day M. Night Shyamalan’s hope of becoming the new ‘Steven Spielberg’ died.

Our reader Bret C. was quick to remind us that today marks the 10th anniversary of the release of Shyamalan’s The Village, which boasted an absolutely moronic finale that was clearly forced to appease fans of The Sixth Sense. It was also a sucky movie.

In it, the population of a small, isolated countryside village – featuring Sigourney Weaver, William Hurt and Joaquin Phoenix – believe that their alliance with the mysterious creatures that inhabit the forest around them is coming to an end.

After Shyamalan’s 1999 The Sixth Sense, Hollywood and accompanying press were quick to dub him the new Steven Spielberg, only they spoke way too soon. His criminally underrated 2000 Unbreakable was panned by critics, and even his 2002 Signs, which has its moments, received extreme criticism.

By then, hope was dwindling that Shyamalan was the man we all thought he would be, and if anything, The Village lay him harshly in a coffin setting the stage for the 2006 Lady in the Water to hammer the final nails in.

Today we raise a glass, turn it over, and poor it to the ground in remembrance of the most overhyped director of the decade. Next up, we’ll be talking about J.J. Abrams…

As someone who is obsessed with UFOS (or more recently known as UAPs) and the concept of extraterrestrials, I love a good documentary. Sightings have been on the rise since the 1940s, with the atomic bomb seemingly acting as a catalyst for new visitors. But what are these UFOs/UAPs? Is there an explanation or are they simply beyond our explanation? Why are they here? Who are they? How much do our governments know? The questions are endless and so are the documentaries that attempt to uncover the secrets behind decades of sightings and alleged confrontations.

Whether you’re a seasoned viewer or new to the rabbit hole, there’s always a handful of interesting documentaries to get your neurons firing and leave you with sleepless nights. SCREAMBOX is investigating with the addition of several docs, all streaming now on the Bloody Disgusting-powered service. Here’s the breakdown:

Aliens Uncovered: ET or Man-Made (2022): The crash of Roswell wasn’t meant for New Mexico. In 1947, a neighboring state had 3 major sightings that were swept under the rug.

Aliens Uncovered: The Golden Record (2023): In the late 70s, the US government launched a message to our distant neighbors.

Roswell (2021): This high-flying documentary examines the July 1947 crash of a United States Army Air Forces balloon at a ranch near Roswell, New Mexico. Theories claim the crash was actually that of a flying saucer, but what is the truth?
