New ‘Kholat’ Trailer Refuses to Reveal its Secrets

We finally have our first real look at the upcoming indie horror game Kholat, and thanks to the wonders of Unreal Engine 4, it is looking good. The game is named after Siberia’s “Death Mountain”, where nine students lost their lives on a hiking trip in 1959. I included the incident in my list of creepy real places horror games should visit because of the unsettling mystery surrounding the tragedy. To this day, we still don’t know what caused the group’s untimely deaths.

Kholat aims to explore this real mystery in what looks like a very cold game. The incident is tragic, but it’s our love of the unknown that also makes it ripe for creative interpretation. It really is a fantastic setting for a horror game, and everyone can appreciate a horrifying tale that — unlike most films that claim they are based on almost nothing — really is “based on a true story”.

There’s not much to glean in terms of how the game will play, but I’m really digging the music in this trailer. I hope it’s original.

Kholat is scheduled to arrive on PC later this year.

I’m not a gamer at all, but I was definitely blown away by these graphics.

Hollywood should seriously take a lesson from horror video game makers lately. The trailers they make are creative and enticing while holding back enough to keep you interested. Horror movies, on the other hand, seem to shoot their whole scare wad in the first 10 seconds of the first trailers so nothing’s scary by the time you get to the theater to watch it anymore.

Been keeping an eye on this for a while via the Steam Greenlight, and hope it lives up to the trailers as it looks genuinely chilling (and, no, that’s not a pun about Russian weather…)
