bjcolangelo

In the world of horror, there are a few voices that aim to take the genre and prove that it’s more than just blood and guts. They strive to show how important, powerful, and worthy the genre is and why it should be recognized for its intelligence, its strength, and its creativity.

One of these voices is BJ Colangelo, who is the owner and voice behind Day Of The Woman, a blog dedicated to studying and honoring the role of women in horror. In a male-dominated industry, BJ’s voice proves time and time again that women are just as strong and capable as the villains they face, the men they suffer, and the scenarios they endure.

But that’s all film, a series of scenes and vignettes that we watch for our amusement. Unfortunately, BJ was hit with horror in real life in the form of pancreatic cancer, a devastating illness that leaves few survivors. But just like the characters she writes about, BJ defeated her villain. Still, no battle leaves the hero without their fair share of scars.

On top of going through horrible procedures and surgeries, including the removal of a tennis ball sized tumor, her spleen, 22 lymph nodes, and 40% of her pancreas, that have left her far less able to work, BJ now faces the crushing weight of medical bills. And that’s what brings us here right now.

You see, BJ used to be a Bloody-Disgusting writer. She’s still heavily embroiled in the horror world. She’s family. She’s one of us. And she needs our help. She has written a post on her own Tumblr but we at BD want to spread the word. We want to do what we can to help her out. And that’s why we’re bringing this to your attention.

If you can donate anything, and any little bit helps, you can help BJ by sending any donations to brittnahjade@gmail.com via Paypal.

    Sending wishes and prayers.

    • Lyle Chip Chipperson

      So you are doing nothing?

      • Khy

Of all the articles to be an ass on- just stop.

        • Lyle Chip Chipperson

I am sorry that I live in reality. Like I stated above, if you really want to help you would be sharing this story or donating. You sending your “wishes and prayers” is just your way of feeling like you did something good when you have helped no one.

And don’t play the victim card here. You wishing away her medical bills does nothing. Your comment was only posted to make yourself feel better.

“Two hands working can do more than a thousand hands clasped in prayer.”

          • Khy

How in the hell are you going to sit there and act like you know what I’m doing or NOT doing based on a comment I posted in which I simply said “sending wishes and prayers her way”? That’s just me letting her know I’m thinking of her. As far as “sharing this story” or “Donating” you’re doing nothing but making ASSUMPTIONS, half-assed ones at that. I don’t have to post “OH LOOK AT ME! I’M DONATING!” to prove a damn thing to you, who are you but some faceless chump behind a monitor? Why don’t you focus on YOURSELF and what you’re doing to help this woman instead of randomly attacking people all because they said the word “prayer”. You can reply and get the last word- That’s extremely fine, because I’m not about to turn this particular article into a mindless flame war. I’m not distasteful. Peace out.

          • Lyle Chip Chipperson

There you go again turning yourself into a victim again. Nice “You don’t know me!” cliche as well. I stand by my point. Prayer is useless.

Read the Bible, Matthew 6 5-6. Praying is not something you advertise or do in public. Jesus himself says that people who do so are hypocrites and just want people to think they are good for praying.

          • ThunderDragoon

Jesus also said the only way to the Father is through Him. But do you believe that? Do you believe that Jesus died for you? Of course not. You’re an atheist. Atheists quoting the Bible is the most pathetic thing I’ve seen on the internet. They don’t believe, yet their mission is to refute every statement a Christian says. Even something as simple as somebody sending prayers. Really? Is that how low you want to go? Prayer isn’t useless, but you wouldn’t know that. Does God answer every prayer with a yes? Of course not. But there is always an answer and a plan for everything. Most atheists actually believe in God and are just mad because they blame Him for all the bad things in their lives. Make something out of what He has given you, instead of turning it into a negative. May God bless you and lead you on the right path, the path to Him, before it’s too late.

          • Lyle Chip Chipperson

I don’t know how atheists can be angry at something they don’t believe in. It is like you getting mad at Santa after finding out he isn’t real either.

Most Atheists do not believe in God because they have actually read the Bible. Which is more than I can say for most Christians. The Bible clearly says not to pray in public or advertise your prayer to others. The fact that I am an atheist doesn’t change what the book says.

Why don’t you use some logic. If God knows everything that will happen and has a “plan” like the Bible says, then what is the point of prayer? God’s plan will happen no matter what, so why pray? Prayer is illogical.

          • Steve Saunders

Oh, I love a good ole threat. “May God bless you and lead you on the right path, the path to Him, before it’s too late.” It is packaged so nicely but you are still saying to him that he needs to believe or he will be tortured for an eternity.

How does any of this stuff make sense? God sacrificed his son(who is also Him) onto himself to create a loophole in rules he created. And now if you don’t accept God and Jesus, you will burn for an eternity. He will send you to a place of fire and smoke and torture and anguish til the rest of time…..but he loves you.

      • J Jett

Lyle, just fuck off. you’re a complete dick bag. do you REALLY have nothing better to do with your pathetic life than troll a story about someone’s battle with cancer? you really need to fuck off and die. do us and the world a favor and do that.

        • Lyle Chip Chipperson

How am I trolling a the story about her cancer? Prayer is useless. I made that point very clear. But instead of you trying to refute that, you just lie and claim that I am attacking the cancer story.

If y’all really want to help then you would share this story or donate. Sending “wishes and prayers” does absolutely nothing but make the person praying feel better.

          • Khy

“If y’all really want to help then you would share this story or donate. ”
And how in the hell do you know we haven’t? Do you know how idiotic you’re sounding? “Omg! He said the word prayer! Omg! He MUST not be doing anything else!”. You’re an idiot. I don’t know what you’ve been through in your troubled life- but don’t project it on me. See a Psychiatrist.

          • Lyle Chip Chipperson

I thought you just said that you didn’t want to turn this into a flame war. So you reply to my comment directed at Jett calling me an idiot and saying I need psychiatric help.

Lovely job showing that your word means nothing.

          • J Jett

Lyle, i DID donate to the above link to help BJ out. and i freely admit i’m not religious really at all. i just think your snarky comment on this article/story is extremely nasty and shows that your parents did a piss poor job at raising you to be a compassionate, respectful person.

being snarky/negative on other articles on this site is one thing but being that way on a story about someone’s battling cancer is just a really low, vile thing to do.

none of your comments on this story were even ON TOPIC!! you just came and made a unnecessary, dickish comment and then continued to make several more argumentative comments.

THAT WASN’T THE POINT OF THIS ARTICLE!!! YOU COMPLETELY HIJACKED THIS WELL INTENTIONED ARTICLE!!!

just curious, did YOU donate to help BJ out?

          • Lyle Chip Chipperson

When you try to make a point by typing in all caps it just makes you look unstable and unintelligent, regardless of how good of a point it may be.

Why are you acting like I am just replying to thin air? For every comment I posted, two people who were “outraged” replied to me. So I replied back.

Don’t act like you are above this in any way. If you were, and if this off topic conversation really bothered you that much, you wouldn’t have replied with your long and rather unlettered response. You are continuing this discussion and then condemning me for doing the same.

And yes, I did donate. I am glad that you donated too. That actually helped her out. Rather than just sending delusional thoughts her way.

        he has a point

  • Dark Scorpion

My father died of cancer…. i really don’t want people to suffer from that illnes, it’s a living hell, so im sending all my good wishes, she must be strong, so please, don’t ever quit ! and defeat that monster.

    • J Jett

Dark Scorpion, i’m really sorry about your dad. i can totally relate. cancer took my dad about 12 years ago and it took my mother 2 years ago and then my little brother 2 months after my mom passed. i’m still a fucking mess over losing them. CANCER FUCKING SUCKS!!

    • Khy

Very sorry to hear that Dark Scorpion.

  • ThunderDragoon

One of my very close family friends, who I really consider a second grandma, is currently going through her battle with cancer, so I completely understand the situation. I’ll help as much as I can.

    • J Jett

ThunderDragoon, i’m sorry about your friend/2nd grandma. for what it’s worth, i’m sending out prayers and as much positive thoughts/energy that i can for her to be ok.

  • J Jett

i will donate but (please forgive my lameness) how exactly can i donate? i have paypal but i don’t know the exact procedure to donate.

BJ, hang in there and stay strong. you aren’t alone in this.

  • BJ Colangelo

I cannot begin to express the gratitude I feel for both JonnyB and the rest of the Bloody-Disgusting family for raising awareness. It took a lot of strength for me to even admit that I needed financial help because I never wanted to seem like someone just looking for a hand out. Thank you for caring about me, I am humbled and shocked at your kindess. I love all of you. Thank you, thank you. Thank you.

    • Khy

Stay strong BJ! Our community loves you.

  • J Jett

i will donate if someone can show/tell me exactly how to do so.

    • JonathanBarkan

When you log into your Paypal account, there will be a button towards the top that says, “Send money to a friend”. From there, enter the email at the bottom of the article and donate whatever you’d like. It’s that simple. Thank you!

      • J Jett

        Jonathan, thank you! :)

I would strongly recommend setting up an account over at gofundme.com because they don’t charge a single penny and I think it would also help spread the word since they can explain the whole situation on their “fund me” page. I’ve donated 3 times to that website for 2 friends and 1 stranger via medical bills with great results. Other than that, keep fighting and stay positive!

  • minya

My mom just entered Calvary Hospital in the Bronx, cancer is a real horror, prayers, science and donations will help. I’m with you BJ.
