Marvel Studios Signs Benedict Cumberbatch To “Doctor Strange”

Deadline reports the rumor we all heard was confirmed long ago is now official. Marvel Studios have signed Benedict Cumberbatch for the lead role in “Doctor Strange.”

This is news I’ve been eagerly anticipating. Cumberbatch is an inspired choice who will carry the right amount of mysticism and pride to the role. Debuting in the silver age, Doctor Stephen Vincent Strange (known as Doctor Strange) is a superhero/former neurosurgeon who serves as the Sorcerer Supreme — the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats.

Already, Cumberbatch shows he can command the screen in the incredible BBC miniseries Sherlock and chances are pretty good he’ll have an Oscar nomination for his work in The Intimidation Game. I think the actor will make a charming addition to the already robust world of the Marvel Cinematic universe.

Scott Derrickson is directing Doctor Strange and Jon Spaihts is writing the script for the pic (the first draft was penned by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer). Doctor Strange was hatched by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko during that Marvel Comics heyday of the early 1960s. He’s a neurosurgeon who becomes Sorcerer Supreme, protecting Earth against magical and mystical threats with powers of sorcery, mysticism, and martial arts. Marvel’s Kevin Feige is producing.
