‘The Blob’ Remake Grows Again, This Time With…

theblob1988

Goldcrest Films is set to co-produce the long-gestured update of 1958 horror/sci-fi classic The Blob, which once had Rob Zombie attached to direct.

Simon West (Wild Card, The Mechanic, Expendables 2) is getting behind the camera with principal photography eyed for this summer, says Deadline.

The original film, which was released by Paramount, starred a young Steve McQueen. The story sees a gelatinous alien life-form emerge from a crashed meteor and begin to ooze through Downtingon, Pennsylvania, eating the townsfolk as it goes.

A 1972 sequel, <Beware! The Blob, was helmed by Larry Hagman, and in 1988, Chuck Russell directed Kevin Dillon in a remake of the original.

West says, “With modern CGI we can now fully realize the potential of The Blob. The world I create will be totally believable, immersive and emotionally satisfying. It’s a thrill to introduce an enduring icon to a wider audience and a whole new era of fans.”

Good luck, try and top this…

The Blob

How do we honor a sci-fi horror movie that was praised for practical creature effects?
Throw in a ton of CGI!

    • Gabbi Cordero

This will be “The Thing” 2011 all over again

      • Harley Mitchel Dirk

Which is sad because the Thing had ADI and they had some nice anamitronics that were only seen briefly. Other times the effects would be covered with a CGI mess.

He must have missed the 1988 version because the full potential of the Blob was realized. That had spectacular effects and it didn’t need, whats it called? CGI (Computer Garbage Imagery). I am not against CGI but I think it should be used in very small doses to do minor fixes on practical effects and compliment them.

Wow, it’s like he’s saying it on purpose specifically to piss off horror fans. Needless to say, I wont be giving this movie any of my money. I will be seeing it, but I wont be paying to.

  • Rob

    *sigh*

  • morrisseylikesburgers

Trying to imagine a Rob Zombie helmed Blob. How do you make a giant gelatinous space alien white trash?

    • Leebo

Well, the actually blob would probably be some white trash strippers period blood!
(I’m not sure if you use the term in the US, but in the UK we describe a woman’s monthly cycle as being “on the blob”). Yum!

The period blood mixes with the runout from a discarded can of Keystone and the reaction forms the blob.

I wonder how he’d give it long hair.

perfect title for chris christie’s autobiography

    • elpinche

Really? Getting political now? Man, that angry fat fuck can’t catch a break.

  • TheWorst

    Paycheck cash grab.

Every time I visit this website, I see another article with the word “remake” in the title.

    • Dismemberment

not their fault. blame hollywood for having no balls to do something new. BD is only reporting what hollywood is doing because BD is not a movie production company. just my 2c.

      • Chrissie-Watkins

Oh, no, you are absolutely right, Dismemberment. I was more lamenting the amount of remakes, rather than blasting the site for reporting on them. I didn’t really clarify, feeling like it would be a long, unreadable rant if I did. :-)

Will this be a remake of the original or a remake of the remake? http://filmcutting.com/simon-west-to-direct-the-blob-remake/

  • elpinche

With a portfolio like that , Simon West sounds like an expendable director making another expendable piece of shit remake.

  • redeyedjedi410

he started off by saying “with modern CGI”…..fail

  • Bobby Price

Ugh, Hollywood be loving themselves some CGI circlejerks. I’m still trying to figure out how the effects were done so well for the ’88 remake.

  • HarryWarden

Surprised this article failed to mention that West was also the director of the When a Stranger Calls remake, being that this is a horror site and all.

    • alliedcola

I don’t think anyone likes to be associated with When a Stranger Calls…

“The world I create will be totally believable, immersive and emotionally satisfying.” ….except for, y’know, shitty looking unbelievable CG effects.

  • Full Frontal Squashing

This has piece of crap written all over it

  • Jason L.

You would think Hollywood has plans to resurrect Plan 9 from Outer Space at some point…

  • Daniel Anderson

“With modern CGI we can now fully realize the potential of The Blob.”

Totally lost my interest. the 1980′s remake is still one of my favorite all time remakes, just like “The Thing” (remake of black and white, the thing from another world) made it more brutal and surprised the hell out of me after watching the original and then seeing people being digested in real time, lol. What made it one of my top fav’s is definitely the effects. Adding CGI improperly diminishes my ability to be immersed in the movie.

  • DBZEROGRAVITY

Should have left out the cgi moment… instantly pissed off every horror fan on the planet
