DC Comics Announces Line Wide Revamp – The New 52 Ends In June

Published

on

Beginning in June, after DC’s reality smashing Convergence event, the New 52 will be over. 25 of the highest profile titles will remain unhindered by the event, but 24 new ones will begin on June 3rd. With a focus on story over continuity. So before you start screaming “another reboot!” I assure this is anything but. Some creative teams are changing, some are staying the same, but the emphasis is on diversity.

Geoff Johns is off Superman after issue #39, with a incredibly short run that saw him introduce a new superpower and supersuit for the Kryptonian God. Who knows what comes next for The Man of Tomorrow other than Eisner-winning comics creator Gene Luen Yang, known for his graphic novels  “American Born Chinese” and “The Shadow Hero,” makes his DC Comics debut by taking over writing duties on “Superman.”

Elsewhere in the DC Universe sees James Tynion IV take over what’s currently known as “Justice League Dark” and evolve it into “Dark Universe” perhaps in an attempt to streamline the title with the upcoming Guillermo Del Toro picture of the same name. He’ll be assisted by Ming Doyle on art duties. Then, we have what I consider the most exciting change to the lineup with Ming Doyle taking over scripting duties on “Constantine: The Hellblazer” and handing over art duties to none other than Riley Rossmo. Rossmo is not only the perfect choice to revamp the ailing hero after the loss of his Vertigo series, but his art will add a dark charm that the whole of DC comics line was missing.

I’m also ecstatic to see Steve Orlando making his DC Comics debut with ACO on a new “Midnighter” ongoing. As the greatest tactician in all of mankind emerges onto the scene, make sure to watch Orlando cut out his own corner of the superhero world with his sharp and surreal writing style. This is one series to watch.

These changes will be handled after the DC offices move from New York to Burbank and begin a new era for the publisher. Giving the imprint a renewed focus on accessibility and diversity. The new creative teams really show it.

“This heralds in a new era for the DC Universe which will allow us to publish something for everyone, be more expansive and modern in our approach and tell stories that better reflect the society around us,” DC Entertainment Co-Publisher Dan DiDio said in the press release. “Whether you’ve been a DC fan your whole life, or whether you are new to comics — there will be a book for you beginning in June.”

Bryan Hitch makes his long anticipated return to DC with “Justice League of America.” Garth Ennis returns to collaborate with his Hitmen co-creator John McCrea for a new limited series called “Section Eight.” Additional new titles announced by DC include a “Black Canary” book written by “Batgirl” co-writer Brenden Fletcher; “Starfire,” written by the “Harley Quinn” team of Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti, “Cyborg,” “Bizarro,” “Bat-Mite” and “Prez;” the latter three of which are described by Jim Lee in the press release as “offbeat, irreverently funny titles.”

The 25 ongoing series set to continue in June, most with current creative teams, are: “Action Comics,” “Aquaman,” “Batgirl,” “Batman,” “Detective Comics,” “Batman/Superman,” “Catwoman,” “Deathstroke,” “The Flash,” “Gotham Academy,” “Gotham By Midnight,” “Grayson,” “Green Arrow,” “Green Lantern,” “Harley Quinn,” “Justice League,” “Justice League United,” “Lobo,” “Secret Six,” “Sinestro,” “New Suicide Squad,” “Superman,” “Superman/Wonder Woman,” “Teen Titans” and “Wonder Woman.”

‘Witchblade’ is Getting Resurrected This Summer in New Comic Series from Top Cow and Image Comics

Witchblade, the popular comic series that initially ran from 1995 to 2015 and launched a TV series, is getting resurrected in a new comic series from Top Cow and Image Comics. It’s set to unleash heavy metal, black magic and blood this summer.

Look for the new Witchblade series to launch on July 17, 2024.

In Witchblade #1, “New York City Police Detective Sara Pezzini’s life was forever fractured by her father’s murder. Cold, cunning, and hellbent on revenge, Sara now stalks a vicious criminal cabal beneath the city, where an ancient power collides and transforms her into something wild, magnificent, and beyond her darkest imaginings. How will Sara use this ancient power, or will she be consumed by it?”

The series is penned by NYT Best-Selling writer Marguerite Bennett (AnimosityBatwomanDC Bombshells) and visualized by artist Giuseppe Cafaro (Suicide SquadPower RangersRed Sonja). The creative duo is working with original co-creator Marc Silvestri, who is the CEO of Top Cow Productions Inc. and one of the founders of Image Comics. They are set to reintroduce the series to Witchblade’s enduring fans with “a reimagined origin with contemporary takes on familiar characters and new story arcs that will hook new readers and rekindle the energy and excitement that fueled the 90’s Image Revolution that shaped generations of top creators.”

Bennett said in a statement, “The ability to tell a ferocious story full of monsters, sexuality, vision, and history was irresistible.” She adds, “Our saga is sleek, vicious, ferocious, and has a lot to say about power in the 21st century and will be the first time that we are stopping the roller coaster to let more people on. I’ve loved Witchblade since I was a child, and there is truly no other heroine like Sara with such an iconic legacy and such a rich, brutal relationship to her own body.”

“The Witchblade universe is being modernized to reflect how Marguerite beautifully explores the extreme sides of Sara through memories, her personal thoughts, like desire and hunger, in her solitude and when she is possessed by the Witchblade. So, I had to visually intersect a noir True Detective-like world with a supernatural, horror world that is a fantastic mix between Berserk and Zodiac,” Cafaro stated.

Marc Silvestri notes, “This is brand new mythology around Sara, and I can’t wait for you to fall in love with her and all the twists and turns. Discover Witchblade reimagined this summer, and join us as we bring all the fun of the 90s to the modern age and see how exciting comics can be. I can’t wait for you to read this new series.”
